Coach Pearl Dismissed Major Wingate

Major was far too inconsistent to be a big help. You couldn't count on him to play solid.

an inconsistant center is better than no center. He was at least physically there and could box out great

Couldn't rebound and had hands of stone inside. Difficult for us to work the ball inside to a guy who can't catch the ball. Also a bad actor, yeah we will really miss his presence.

Just wanted to say that CHris Low of the Tennessean was on 104.5 the zone this afternoon. Said that without Major we dont even make the NCAA tourney.

That makes no sense to me. Wingate had some nice games at the end of the year, but he had to be one of the worst rebounding big men that I've ever seen.

In Pearl's system, they can survive without dominating the boards. That's what the press and tunovers are for. Sure, they lose Wingate, but they gain Chism and Crews who are both better rebounders than Wingate if I'm not mistaken. I know neither has played real college ball, but if they live up to their hype, we'll be ok I think.

This really sucks but I think it's good Bruce is laying down the law for the program. It's kinda sucks that we finally get a competitive team and Major was only a part of it for one season.

That surprises me that Lowe would say something stupid like that. I wouldn't put anything past Pearl.

With that said, it's not good that we are going to start 3 new players, probably 4.

1. Ramar Smith - Jordan Howell
2. Chris Lofton - JuJuan Smith
3. Marques Johnson - Dane Bradshaw
4. Duke Crews - Tony Passley (?)
5. Wayne Chism - Ryan Childress

That leaves Josh Tabb on the bench and maybe Steven Pearl.

This just in... Chris Lowe is a moron.

Wasn't UW-M a VERY young team last year? Pearl is a miracle worker... :p

If Pearl can take that slop he was working with last year and whip it into a 20+ win and tourney (forget #2 seed) team, I have all the confidence in the world he can do it again.

But with that said, with the influx of extremely young and inexperienced players the Vols are gonna be relying on, I'm gonna temper my expectations for them this season and be satisfied with 17 or 18 wins.

I agree wholeheartedly Tiddy. Realizing the age of the team he's working with, I'll leave my expectations on par with last year... just under 20 wins, and getting past the first round in March.

After last year, I am definitely a believer in Coach Pearl. He will again work with the hand that he is dealt, and his team will outwork most of their opponents.

Major only averaged 4.0 rebounds per game, which seems very low for your starting center. He only led the team in rebounding once last year (7 vs. Lipscomb) and tied for the most rebounds in one other game (5 vs. South Alabama, t.Dane Bradshaw). He only led the team in scoring in four games last year. And I totally agree with the comments that his hands were terrible.

Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know all that. But that being said, I still think that this is a big loss for the team. I had heard that he was in really good shape coming into this year. If nothing else, you just hate to lose a big body underneath. Frontcourt depth was one of our biggest problems last year. The team's depth was supposed to be one of the strong points this year. We will be deep in the backcourt, but now, with his dismissal, we instantly have the problem with frontcourt depth again, except now, the players we have are much younger than Patterson and Wingate from a year ago. Pearl said that last year he couldn't practice the team the way he would've liked to because of fear of an injury, such as an ankle injury, etc. Now it looks like we are in the same situation again.

You realize that is 4 true freshman starters....whew! I think Dane still starts to provide some experience and leadership to the starting group. But, who knows, we'll see.

I guess you can never tell what Coach Pearl might do, but I agree. I think Dane starts at one of the forward spots now because of his experience and just out of necessity. Pearl used Dane to guard much larger players last year, and I'm still not a huge believer in Ryan Childress. I was hoping that Dane would only be underneath in the pinch this year, though - foul trouble, etc. Still, we are gonna be counting on the freshmen & newcomer Tony Passley alot. If it wasn't for Coach Pearl, that would be a recipe for disaster.

I think all we're really losing here is some on/off the court personality and depth. Not like he was being a leader by example with failed drug screens, and he was a sub par SEC offensive player. There were a couple games he played over his head, but he was too inconsistent. It hurts, but not nearly as bad as Chris Lowe might lead us to believe.

How many freshman did Florida start last season? I can't remeber but didn't they start quite a few or am I still under the influence of the booze from saturday.

I believe Florida's plethora of talent last year were all Sophomores... I know Brewer and Noah were anyway. Not sure about Horford and Green.
