im interested to see who you guys think are the best coaches in college football. lets leave how they recruit out of the equation. here is mine

1. Nick Saban
2. Kirk Ferentz
3. Urban Meyer
4. Bob Stoops
5. Pete Carroll

I think CLK can be on this list but im not going to judge based on his first year

Can you explain this? I've seen him mentioned as a great coach before, but I really just don't see it at all. I feel the same way about Les Miles.

Also, IMOI think Stoops flubs too many big games with the talent level he has- just like his boys Mack Brown and Tressel.

Number 2 borders on comical. Add a coach that competes for a BCS conference title every year, like Tressel or Brown, and you'll get some arguments. Add a coach who used to be good like Bowden or Paterno and you'll get discussion. Hell, add a recruiter who two-lossed his way into winning the NCG like Les Miles. But don't add Kirk Ferentz, the coach who is constantly among the higest paid for no apparent reason, especially at #2.

He is the Tedford of the Big Ten.

well you see he beat sec schools to a pulp in almost every year in a bowl game. he beat LSU, UF, USCjr and should have beat florida again if it werent for terrible refs. Also played a heck of a game against mack brown all while have much much less talent then all of these team. its the state of iowa for gods sakes. and plus an NFL team offers him a HC job every year but he just loves iowa. then again that is just my opinion and im not the only one saying he's a great coach

I agree on Pete Carroll but where is Mack Brown?? I dont think he gets any credit...granted they dont hardly play any good teams but I think he is underrated..IMO!

You included Kirk Ferentz in your top 5 - therefore the discussion will probably be 95% based on that - maybe people will look past it though since you username is IowaVol57.

i think saban is far above the rest cuz he can recruit, coach, and discipline.

miles is lucky he inherited such a great team, and that it is comparatively easy to recruit at LSU for a number of reasons

I also believe CLK has everything he needs to put himself on this list in a few years, and it will be better than some other coaches' accomplishments cuz he inherited such a mediocre team

Yeah but i am amazed at how he still recruits and wins... regardless. Today Spurrier couldn't keep up.

1. Pete Carroll hands down.

Seeing as how the OP said not to include recruiting into our analysis, I think this is amore ridiculous choice than Kirk Ferentz... You play in the Pac-10, win your conference every year, and have only played for an NC twice in 10 or more years... Again, I know that is a pretty dang good record, but given the talent he pulls in, I say he is an above average coach but top 3 recruiters. My top 5 would be something like this, in no particular order:

1. Saban
2. Meyer
3. Chris Petersen
4. Brian Kelly
5. Rich Rodriguez

Speaking of good coaches in their prime, I figured Dennis Erickson would have done more at ASU than he has, but thats neither here nor there

oh well i guess you are deaf then when analysts and journalists say he's one of the best coaches in college and I guess you dont see he gets offered by an NFL team every year. but i guess a little forum poster like you would know better then analysts, journalists and front offices of the national football league

Hahaha... How can you not give Carroll credit? He has one of if not the best out of conference records. He also has one of the best "vs. Top 25 records". Look at how many coaches he has produced... like Bill Belichick he has made everyone around him better.

He has had the top defense the last 2 years... while losing so many people. Also look at how many people he puts in the NFL.

gotta agree with glutton, i had to put pete carroll on my list. He does be seeming to lose a little steam tho. I am worried when i see USC offense they just dont look nearly as good as it used too. The USC offense is what were supposed to look like in a few years and the USC offense itself isnt doing much its like defenses have really adjusted to it. I really hope this isnt the case I hope CLK can get it to a championship level
