Coach VOLitello’s current contract?

Let's hope that Coach Vitello's current contract is one we don't know about yet that he signed shortly after returning from Hoover.

I hope the same thing, but let's look at this from a business perspective (and his agent's!): Why would you sign now when your value can only go up from here and not go down? If he loses the regional, he is still as hot to Tennessee as if he won it. If he wins the national title, his value goes way way up, but if he doesn't get to Omaha, his value to UT is the same.

On the other hand, it's in UT's best interest to sign him asap. He may want to get it over with and sign before the season ends for various reasons. But he could also take the other route and not sign with anyone until the season is over.

If he signed the first offer then he is not as smart as we all give him credit for.
And most certainly would not be listening to his agent for advice.

WAIT...did you say “business”??

Yes, but only because I think I heard his agent say "BUSINESS" to him and to UT. And loudly.

I got blasted for calling minor college sports “business”. Just wanted to warn you.

Some here in the “kumbaya” zone think that we should just write a blank check because we have won games this year. ( Yes, the program is on the rise!)

Yes, we obviously need to be responsible with money, especially coming out of this pandemic with no guarntee that our football program won't absolutely crater. On the other hand, this is college sports, and sometimes the bottom line isn't the be-all and end-all. The pride of the tribe is also at stake here.

We've been losing big bucks in the baseball program, I've been told, even though we've been bad. So we may do just as well or better if we invest (logically and appropriately) and become a national power. Some programs in this league break even after big investments made. I don't see why we can't be one of them.

As far as the minor leagues, they lose money only because they are franchises of HUGELY profitable MLB teams. And you see the big clubs trying to stop some of the bleeding now with their MIL downsizing. Think how the NFL basically has no minor league expenses because the Universities develop their talent - i.e someone else pays for thier minor leagues. I'm guessing the trend in the future is more toward that model for ML teams.

I said “minor sports” not “minor league”, and I never mentioned football. It is and will be a train wreck for years to come.

Investment will come as consistent winning comes.

Sorry, misread what you said about minor sports. Hopefully, football can start getting better.

The last time I remember losing a coach to another school we really wanted to keep was Doug Dickey to Florida. Am I missing anyone?

Yeah. Lane Kiffin. UT didn't show him the door and the NCAA wasn't knocking yet. He left for his 'dream' job.

AD White is known for his innovative fundraising. I believe that a revenue stream for baseball will be forthcoming that allows for all the things baseball fans want at UT, provided the boosters and athletic department want those things too. Baseball schools are notorious for working in the red. Game day experience at home to attract crowds and donors will go a long way.

Yeah, I forgot about Kiffin. Good catch. However, there is one difference - he didn't give us a chance to keep him. His dream job and all that.
