Who did those teams beat during the regular season? Notable wins were common with the Pearl teams. This year it's Virginia, and that's it.
I'll gladly discuss this as well (though I understand from the posters here that Bruce, though a great recruiter, always had less talent than other top ranked teams, yet always beat those teams while never losing to lesser teams), but it's a major sidestep from what I was responding too. What had been said was that destroying three SEC (i.e. major college) teams somehow proves Cuonzo is a bad coach, apparently because, if I understand this correctly, a good coach, if his team ever played this good would always play at this level (you know, beating SEC teams by an average of 30 points). So, my response was that, despite being such a lousy coach, he had somehow ended up with more regular season wins than Pearl had in 2 of his 3 non-Lofton years.
I see your point to certain extent...but I really hope that by your last comment, you're not saying that Martin is a better Coach than Pearl. Martin has his qualities, seems to be a good recruiter and all around likable guy, but in game coaching is not his strong point and neither is being a motivator...the team seems to play hard when they want to and when they do, they are Really Really good and hard to beat.
Why are you hoping that's not what he said? Last I checked, Martin was still coach and Pearl was still serving a show cause, so as a Vol fan, you should hope Martin proves to be a better coach. We're on the verge of making the tourney and that still isn't good enough to acknowledge what Martin has accomplished in this last stretch run? I mean, damn, I thought we all wanted to win. I thought that was what fans of a team wanted. But apparently there are still those who are Pearl fans more than they are Vol fans. How do you justify hoping to lose on the off-chance our AD might re-hire Pearl?
The whole Pearl pipe dream has gone up in smoke. Martin is the coach. If our play hadn't improved down the stretch, I could see still calling for CCM's head, but it did improve. Let the man enjoy his success and Vol fans' be happy we're winning. Winning is good.

It's fans like you that give Tennessee a bad name. I guess you cannot articulate your position enough and resort to calling for people who want Zo to go childish names. Keep it up bro as you show your level of maturity. My FACTS, plain and simple, are as follows:
1. Zo has had three years to turn this program around and the simple fact is we cannot consistently compete with the big boys.
2. Zo has the talent on the team that proves to me he should have been playing at this level all year long.
3. Zo has the personality of a dead tree. Not a motivator!
4. We win three games in a row against NIT SEC teams, two of them home games, and the childish fans want to crown Zo for a lifetime!! Good grief!
I will say it again, even if we get to a final 4, it just shows what a TERRIBLE coaching job Zo does! He should have been playing at this level ALL YEAR LONG! NO EXCUSES! Don't get me wrong I want TENNESSEE TO WIN but I also want Zo to go for the long term benefit of the program.
Signed,
A middle school kid who can recognize a good coach when he watches one coach! Zo has PROVEN he is NOT a good coach. This team is a bunch a of talented players WHO ARE TIRED OF LOSING!
:hi:
The SOS this year is better than any of Pearl's years.

Pretty certain he just expected us not to lose to aTm twice, Vandy once, UTEP, NC St, etc. In other words he expected a talented, experienced team not being a bubble team and living on hopes and prayers at the end of the season to get into the NCAA's. I am pretty certain he also doesn't all of a sudden believe we are world beaters and getting to the Final Four just because we smacked the dregs of an awful SEC. I dunno, maybe we can ask him.
Hey, Stoked4Zo, is my above a fair assessment?
Other sites have the SOS different. In the year you have them #1 SOS when they were ranked #14 and won less games than this year two other sites have the SOS as #40 and #31.

So maybe we can argue what the SOS is each year. The fact remains its top 20 this year and we weren't ranked. Those teams were ranked with more talent and won less games had low seeds and lost first round. Those years are worse than this year. Especially if you are talking about fulfilling expectations.
We were in based on our talent, our strong wins, and our early season hype. We beat out Pitt and Villanova in a neutral court which gave us a strong resume. Same year weHe's made the same post twice in the last few pages of this thread. I pointed out earlier that we had 8 wins over NCAA tourney teams in Pearl's final season and we've not even played 8 games against NCAA teams this year.
That's why the 19 wins vs Div 1 opponents Pearls final season are >>>>>> than the 19 we have this year. It's why we were easily in the field his last year and we're hoping to avoid the play-in game this year.
Where the hell are you getting that SOS is better than any of Pearls years? First, the SEC is horrible this year. Second, we didn't play a Kansas or Texas or Memphis type team in non-conference. Don't expect anyone with a memory going back more than three years to believe that dung.People keep saying Pearl would have won this or that many games. Based on what? He did less with more talent several times. The SOS this year is better than any of Pearl's years. The myth Pearl never lost to lesser teams is a huge lie. He lost to a bunch of weaker teams. Including a few blow outs. All with ranked teams. If you don't like Martin cool. But stop acting like Pearl is some god who would have won a bunch of games with this team. He can't make them hit lay ups and free throws. We hit a normal percentage a few games and we would be ranked right now.
