Coachery

I know the chronology of how the initial information came to light, and who they interviewed after. I don’t think it would be fair to blame the coaches who answered questions honestly. The original issue involved the recruitment of Mims, as reported. When that issue was reviewed, it was revealed that there were several common practices that were similar to what happened with Mims. The coaches who told the truth, just told the truth. In fairness to them, this was not run of the mill cheating. Nieds behaved like some unhinged pimp. Most of the coaches were uncomfortable with it. It was known about by competitive coaches, and players from other teams. It was a running joke.
I am hopeful (though not confident) that the University's swift and decisive action will help mitigate forthcoming penalties.

Any info on who they may have on their wish list for AD and HC ? We know the wish list of the fans is long but what about the Admin. do they have a favorite or two, I'll set back and watch the mania and wait for the real info.

I know they have spoken to Ingram and Gilbert for AD. Both were contacted due to existing relationships. I assume the search committee will have a more exhaustive list.

On a positive note, it sounds like some of coaches who are former Vols are staying to help the transition. It also sounds legitimate that there is a group of boosters including Manning who have regularly met with Boyd. They have a substantial financial commitment that has grown to be very large— plenty to attract a serious candidate. I’ll reiterate something I heard earlier: Plowman has quashed any discussion of any candidates that have past NCAA baggage.

Including Chadwell? I don’t think he has a show cause.

The determination to attract serious candidates seems to have been lacking the last few times - I'm very pleased that the attitudes of those in power may have changed. Given the circumstances of Pruitt's departure, I can fully understand Plowman's avoidance of certain coaches. I hope they choose well and I wish our next coach to have greater success than Robert Neyland. It will be an interesting few weeks (or, depending on timing, perhaps an interesting year). If Kevin Steele must remain acting head coach throughout the season for us to find the perfect fit, then I'm on board with it.

I’ve just heard what she said. My own interpretation of who it applies to might be different than that of others. I’d take it as ruling out Chadwell. I could be wrong.
He doesn’t have a show cause, but he certainly has baggage. If you are wanting to position your program as squeaky clean, this isn’t your guy.

From Wiki (yes, I know, I know):
In 2018, the NCAA released a detailed report concerning numerous NCAA violations that occurred during Chadwell's tenure as the CSU head football coach. The violations ranged from using multiple ineligible players to players using scholarship funds to purchase electronics and jewelry from the campus book store. Ultimately, the NCAA sanctions vacated 18 wins from the 2014 and 2015 seasons and the 2015 Big South Championship. Also vacated were three wins over crosstown rival The Citadel, games during which CSU used ineligible players.

I understand. I was hammered here a few days ago by a few for suggesting that Chadwell would not be hired here for the previous infractions at Charleston. They stated the allegations were not Chadwell’s fault and just an example of a weak compliance Dept.

Any insight into what the athletic department is anticipating in terms of the NCAA’s reaction? At this point, I think that’s going to really determine who would be interested in coming here.

And as we are seeing now, a head coach can’t shrug and claim innocence when the compliance department is MIA or non-existent.

This is something that fans need to grasp: recruits can’t pretend to know that it’s ok when colleges “sweeten the deal”, and head coaches can’t pretend not to know that something odd is going on when recruitment suddenly skyrockets despite a meh W-L record.

We can hope so, but I'm afraid that in their greed to get rid of Pruitt without the buyout, the three stooges instead have invited the NCAA in to pillage our athletic department.

I think that the hiring of an AD is the most important part of this whole thing. We have 3 or 4 candidates that were all aware of since they are VERY familiar with the Vols and the thinking of the masses. Blackburn, Ingram, Gilbert and Carter are all very capable and I think if I had a dog in the hunt I would make them all say NO but I do understand in someways the wanting to find the best even if they are new to the University.

When it comes to a coach for some reason I just think it is going to be someone that is not a current or recent college coach. I think they are looking for a manager and a rebuilder that has thick skin and is a communicator, that is not afraid of the Spotlight or Microscope. That has NFL written all over it and when you look at who the ones that will be helping and giving opinions ( Haslems, Peyton and many VFL's that are ex-Pro's) on the new coach that has NFL written all over it as well.

Time will tell on both fronts and I may be wrong all together but it will be interesting to see how it all plays out if nothing else. It really doesn't matter what they do because a large portion of the fan base will not be happy. All we can do is hope they have learned that you can't pay big money for a Yugo and hope your getting a Mercedes.

Any info on potential AD hire or coaching search ? Also what is the mood inside the AD office? Some are not happy I am sure but from some of the rumor's I have heard not all were shocked or disappointed.

A couple of quick updates from inadmissible hearsay from a very unreliable source who speaks very little English and wishes he never met me: Search firm is moving in overdrive. My friend says they are doing background checks and character interviews on AD candidates already. While it seems to be the journalists’ opinion that an AD won’t be hired until mid February, my friend says he can’t see it going more than a week. He says that there is the most organized group behind how to hire that there has been on any search. There is also the most money prepared to hire someone. He guessed that there is over 40mm to hire a coach on a five plus year contract. He said that the university has the be careful in how they handle the hire. It needs to be perceived as a thoughtful response to the past infractions, or it won’t play well with the NCAA or SEC. Right now, we’re in hot water with both. On Pruitt, my friend said there is a real sadness for the damage done. Some of those fired in compliance were kids following orders. Many of them were told what to say, and then fired for saying it. Players and signees were assured by Pruitt and Fulmer that things would be ok, and he would not be fired. Phil resigned as much for that as he did for Pruitt’s failure. For all Phil’s mistakes, I think he may regret the last few weeks of fighting for Pruitt the most. People who know him say he’s crushed and in a daze. To be clear, Pruitt’s failure was epic, and began on day one. In the early days Pruitt treated AD staff, compliance and even professors like they served the team. Prior to Plowman, more than one person elevated concerns that Pruitt and Nieds practices were too egregious and would be caught. Those concerns were ignored. Many were rooting for him to fail, and many expected it. Pruitt’s style is to use his allegiance of players, and threats to micromanage others. Many of our on the field failures were him making a point. Friend pushed back on cross-training all linemen like high schoolers, and Pruitt tripled cross-training them. Look at West Virginia game for results. This year, Chaney designed three core plays for Shrout without discussing with Pruitt. He used them in a scrimmage, and blew away the D. While it’s a common thing for OC and DC to try things in a scrimmage, Pruitt threw a public fit, and said we’d never see those plays in a game. Pruitt changed starting DL lineup before KY game, and humiliated Brumbaugh in front of team and fired him. Look at the score for the results. This is the kind of thing he was willing to do just to make a point. In the conference people perceive that Nieds and Pruitt created an “arms race” on player payment. (More hearsay) Big signees families typically were given a standard payment in many tens of thousands. There are even instances of players receiving money and signing elsewhere. It will be interesting to see how much of this the NCAA wants to face. UT is on the record after the investigation. Many other coaches know who else plays dirty. The money and power will not want a light shined or Georgia or Bama. Given that Georgia is where some paid players landed, it will be harder for them to hide. The NCAA will be very cautious in how they handle us given the possibility of opening more wounds by digging too deep. That said, our list of level one and two violations is a long one. As for current coaches, they aren’t being given much communication or support for understanding what’s next. Frankly they don’t even know who to listen to. Steele is the key communication point for players. He’s doing a good job. Pruitt spoke highly of him in his message to players. They see Steele as trustworthy. Look for the university to hire an AD quickly, and to make a big offer to a coach with a good reputation and long track record. If you can imagine a candidate selling glitter-coated bibles at a strip club, he probably isn’t getting hired. We probably won’t be hiring Joey Freshwater, Jamey Jet Ski or Reverend Blindside. I’m not judging the quality of those guys as coaches, but no one expects the Chancellor to ride with the devil on this one. Consensus seems to be they are going to pay serious money for a very experienced candidate who will sign a long term deal. Some of the names being discussed are very impressive. I have no idea how realistic they are. If they succeed with that tier, we’ll all be very happy. If they move down a level, expect stability over glitz. Strange times on the hill.

Also: Gilbert is a heavy favorite among Barnes and some key boosters. There is a perception that he knows everyone, and how to give control to bigger fish. My friend says that is the opposite of what Plowman requested in certain ways. It will be interesting to see if that hire is in the family, or from a pool of a national search. None of that implies Gilbert is unqualified or slippery. By all accounts, he’s a star on the rise with high integrity.

One final observation, Nieds, Probst and Pruitt allegedly had a nickname known by Saban, Kirby, Garner, M Stoops etc. When Pruitt bought JJ, who might not have been as good as billed, my friend heard the line “No honor among the North Alabama Shithouse Rats” from a competing coach. He heard that expression many times after. Gotta love it. North Alabama Shithouse Rats. That’s where we’ve been.
