This storm peaks tomorrow it seems. I just wanted to share a positive observation on Pruitt. My friend isn’t a fan, based on the rough experience his neighbor has had working for Pruitt. That said, now may be a good moment to log a few things: Pruitt has been a player’s coach, to a fault. He feeds the players at his house, knows what they’re going through, knows if family members are sick. He helps them transfer, if that is the path they choose, and he spends lots of time helping them think through big decisions. He tells them the truth. They genuinely earn spots in practice. He meets with them individually more than a head coach normally does. He’s earned player loyalty, by being on their side. That includes during this investigation. While he’s been under the spotlight, he hasn’t quit focusing on them. He’s called every player to explain that they should remain committed to UT no matter what happens. He flew to see Henry T, and Q, and has had many many phone calls with players and parents. Pruitt is not a good manager of people (coaches). He has probably meddled more than is healthy. He isn’t a great PR guy. He’s also been caught in the middle of some material violations, and probably can’t claim he didn’t know. Whether he stays or goes, this isn’t going to be pretty. Some big mistakes have been made. That said, he was loyal to the players 24 hours a day, and he never stopped doing his job. I don’t think the things we’ll learn from this investigation are going to make us happy as fans, but I have to credit the guy for remembering his commitment to those kids. I can say with some confidence that no one knows his fate. When the summary report is given to the university, it will be the first time the full body of facts have been shared. Let’s all hope the best for the university and the team. Oddly, as I’ve heard more, I don’t know that the administration could’ve done this much differently. They can’t make a decision until they hear the facts, and they can’t discuss the case. Hiring Steele may prove to be smart. I can guarantee that many of the players will be very hurt if Pruitt goes. Onwards...
