He outcoached Dooley and Jones....want to reconsider? What signature wins at PSU? What's his recruiting ranking? Yes he had some teams at Vandy, but once he was gone it looked more like Miami of old with the character of the players.

While I don't know each case intimately, from what I do know, there is considerably more connecting Schiano to what happened @ Penn State than there is Franklin with what happened at Vandy. Not to mention the players at Tampa hated Schiano.

I think it's a much larger leap to say Franklin is as bad or worse of a person as Schiano. And in any matter, no one really knows the truth in either case, so making a judgement about either man based on 2nd and 3rd hand information is pretty weak.

I don't know the details about the Franklin situation but in regards to Schiano, while I'm glad we didn't get him as coach, his alleged connection to the Penn State scandal was grossly unfair. It was quadruple hearsay. I don't remember all of the coaches involved but essentially Mike McCreary, the guy who admitted that he walked in on Sandusky screwing a kid and did nothing, and thus had a vested interest in trying to spread his dishonor around to as many people as possible, said that Coach A told him that Coach B had said that Coach C told him that Schiano suspected something was going on with Sandusky. Every link of that chain, Coach A, B and C denied saying any such thing and Schiano denied it. If that sort of spurious slander is considered valid no one on this board is safe from being convicted of the most heinous and infamous crimes, not you, not me. We didn't want Schiano as coach, and he probably would have been a bad one, but there is basically no legitimate connection between Schiano and the Penn State scandal.

In 2017, he beat #19 Michigan and #12 Washington in the Fiesta Bowl
In 2018, he beat #18 Iowa
In 2019, he beat #17 Iowa, #16 Michigan, and #17 Memphis in the Cotton Bowl

We'd have been ecstatic with any of those wins.

As for recruiting, he can do that with the best of them. He'd tear up the recruiting trail at UT.

Now he has a .680 win percentage overall, .622 in the Big 10. He consistently battled for the Big 10 east with Urban and OSU and Dantonio at MSU (when Dantonio was taking them to the CFB).

He beat GA and FL, too. Beat Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss. He beat Auburn and Mizzu. More SEC wins at Vandy in 3 years than Butch or Dooley combined from 2010-2014 (5 years).

I don't like the guy but I have respect for his coaching acumen and I hate losing more than my dislike of James Franklin. So I will forgive but not forget the flipping off Neyland, so that I can actually see a team regularly above .500

I am coming around to the idea of Franklin. He is dislikeable, and I don't understand the rape story at Vandy. Is he a bigger lowlife than the coaches we compete against on the recruiting trail and on the field?

And he is a great recruiter who actually had Jalen Hurd considering Vanderbilt.

I like the fact that he has established recruiting ties in the Southeast as well as the Northeast/Midwest. He would generate more excitement among recruits than just about anyone we could hire.
