Coachery

Supposedly he heard the stories. Might have seen something.
Isn't that about the size of it?
McCreary said someone told him that Schiano knew about Sandusky's proclivities, but it was like third or fourth hand gossip basically. The guy who told McCreary, even by McCreary's own account was just repeating what a guy he knew supposedly heard from another guy.

I don't know the details about the Franklin situation but in regards to Schiano, while I'm glad we didn't get him as coach, his alleged connection to the Penn State scandal was grossly unfair. It was quadruple hearsay. I don't remember all of the coaches involved but essentially Mike McCreary, the guy who admitted that he walked in on Sandusky screwing a kid and did nothing, and thus had a vested interest in trying to spread his dishonor around to as many people as possible, said that Coach A told him that Coach B had said that Coach C told him that Schiano suspected something was going on with Sandusky. Every link of that chain, Coach A, B and C denied saying any such thing and Schiano denied it. If that sort of spurious slander is considered valid no one on this board is safe from being convicted of the most heinous and infamous crimes, not you, not me. We didn't want Schiano as coach, and he probably would have been a bad one, but there is basically no legitimate connection between Schiano and the Penn State scandal.

I never held that against Schiano, but I also didn't want the stink of the situation flowing to our program, especially given the Title IX issues we just had the prior season. I just thought the optics were pretty bad. And obviously I believed he wasn't a good coach either.

I am coming around to the idea of Franklin. He is dislikeable, and I don't understand the rape story at Vandy. Is he a bigger lowlife than the coaches we compete against on the recruiting trail and on the field?

no

Anyway, the flight to PA could just be going to pickup Schiano. Just a 57 mile drive.

I don't think Penn State would have hired him had there been any issues...they had to vet candidates really well due to their issues. To his credit, he helped them get out of their mess. I just don't see it though, especially with what he already earns in an easier conference...

Okay, FWIW now some guys on 247 are saying that the media room has been set up for a conference. Lol, at the suspense that only comes with a coaching hire, may we not experience it again for 20 years.

That is what we are hoping for, if we land the right guy.

And he is a great recruiter who actually had Jalen Hurd considering Vanderbilt.

I like the fact that he has established recruiting ties in the Southeast as well as the Northeast/Midwest. He would generate more excitement among recruits than just about anyone we could hire.

Johnny Majors recruited PA and NJ pretty hard

Outside of Tennessee, perception is the Vols luring Franklin away from Penn St would be an absolute home run.

Stealing a Successful P5 HC from a top Big 10 program, one that had a successful HC stop in the SEC and in the same state.

One of the biggest hires in recent memory. Not quite as good as Bama getting Saban, but that’s the only one bigger. In terms of college to college, the biggest “flex” in 20 years

This does not need to be a rushed coaching search and White needs to find the right guy who will be the head coach for an 8 to 10 year stretch.

The February 5th recruiting date is just window dressing as Tennessee has their 2020 class locked up for the most part.

I think we will probably have a new head coach in place by the end of this week or by the first week of February at the latest.

Go Big Orange!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would like to see Campbell, but I could see Elliot working.
You bring in a bright young guy with a lot of upside potential as the HC.
You give him a couple of old pros like Chaney and Steele as OC & DC.
Move Ansley to special teams coordinator and DBs.
Elliot could turn them loose while learning the CEO part of the job.
We thought that was going to be Pruitt
