OU is hurting without Bomar, but they still have the one of if not the best rb in the nation.

A good RB without a solid QB and a good offensive line is a mediocre to terrible RB. See Darren Sproles.

Hell, see Peterson from the first half of last year!

It needs repeating... In college football, 100% of the time, no offensive line = no offense. It is impossible for one to succeed without a line. Period. OU has lost way too much off the line.

I know. However, all OU backers will categorically deny that he was just bad...he was injured. If Stoops is forcing his injured RB to carry the ball 32 times against Tulsa, then Stoops is not the coach people build him up to be.

I'd deny that Peterson was bad... I'd point at "the big uglies." As Milo has pointed out, that situation has probably gotten WORSE for OU.

I would say that Peterson was better than Quentin Griffin and Kejaun Jones. However, I would attribute most of his yards during his freshman tour, to Jason White, Mark Clayton, Brandon Jones, and a defense that gave OU the ball about 40 minutes a game.

There is one thing you have to consider with OU, however... And that is the strength of the Big XII. The North has no contenders whatsoever, nor does the South, save Texas. However, last year IMO Texas was only a decent team plus Vince Young.

So, as weak as I'm predicting Oklahoma's offense will be, they still have a decent shot at the Big XII title and possibly even an undefeated season... Oregon, Texas and Texas Tech being the 3 toughest teams on the schedule. In the event the Sooners do make the national title game, they will probably get mauled.

Predicting a repeat of a couple of years ago, eh?

I have a feeling the BigXII is going to be stronger than people think.

In the North, Nebraska will be strong again. KU continues to get better each year, and Missouri has a strong running game anchored by Tony Temple.

In the South, Texas is reloading. Vince Young is gone, but Jamaal Charles will be a sophomore. Texas Tech always has an offense that makes opposing coaches nervous, and, IMO, A&M will surprise a lot of people this year.

Yeah, the Big XII North is on the way back. You're right, Kansas is starting to come into their own and Nebraska is clawing their way back. Except they're still not contenders... Yet. When we talk Oklahoma/Texas, we're talking national championship-level. The other Big XII teams are not quite there.

Those guys were great, and they really helped Peterson excel, but regardless of the personnel you still have to be a pretty good back to rush for 1900 yards. In fact, OU was had all those same guys the year before, but they never had a RB do anything special that season. Last year AD only had around 1100, but he was clearly the focus of every defense they played. If they get decent QB play anytime during his college career, I expect a 2000+ yard season. Honestly, if you see some of his highlights, the guy can do some special things. I'd still say he's one of the best 5 backs in the country. A lot of people are saying he has benefited from facing weak defenses, yet everyone seems to think Marshawn Lynch is a stud. Lynch hasn't faced defenses any better than the ones AD has faced. And not to criticize our own players or anything, but Arian Foster has never really done anything special against the better defenses we've played. Still, I expect all three of these guys to be stars next year. You can't criticize a guy for playing well against poor defenses.

As for Nebraska, here's a funny article concerning their QB:

A team ranked the previous season in the preseason top 10 does not live up to expectations finishing that season unranked. The team hires a new offensive coordinator. And the upcoming season ends up ranked in the preseason top 25? Why would any voter do that?

The no. 6 team in the 2003 preseason poll was Auburn. The previous season they finished with a no. 13 ranking. However, they finished the 2003 season with 5 losses and unranked. Most of their problems centered around a highly touted offense (talent wise) that did not produce. They hired a new offensive coordinator. They started the 2004 preseason ranked #17 and finished the season undefeated and is still debated that they should have had a shot at the national title.

Similarly, the no. 3 team in the 2005 preseason poll was Tennessee. The previous season they finished with a no. 13 ranking. However, they finished the 2005 season with 6 losses and unranked. Most of their problems centered around a highly touted offense (talent wise) that did not produce. They hired a new offensive coordinator. They started the 2006 preseason ranked #23 and finished the season.....

Good to see the statistical genius still around. Uncanny comparison. I hope our season goes as well as that Auburn one two years ago... but their schedule that year was NOTHING like ours this year.

Our offense is not as talented as Auburn 2004. Nor is David Cutcliffe as good an OC as Al Borges. Expect UT to be better, yes. Do not expect the incredible turnaround Auburn had. Also remember, Auburn's down team still beat us in 2003.

Preseason polls are pointless. Polls shouldn't come out until October.

polls take care of themselves...all the pre season poll does is give us something to talk about...it happens every year...teams that are good and aren't ranked find themselves ranked and those that aren't and are ranked, find themselves not ranked....it all works out in the end, well, except for Auburn that is.
