Nobody gives a damn about protecting the nonexistent Tennessee-Alabama basketball rivalry.

Many of those rivalries are football only rivalries. This league doesn't really have too many great basketball rivalries. That's the model that will most likely be used if they opt for any protected rivalries though.

A 22 game schedule would just make too much sense. I know it would shake up things quite a bit, too much to emplament I would assume. Just seems like the only way you could make this entire situation fair for all involved.

If I am correct, the Big East has two permanent rivalry teams that play twice during a season and the rest rotate.

My guess is that if the SEC stays at 16 games UT would have Kentucky and Vandy as rivalry teams. If they went to 18, my guess is they would add a third. I'd prefer Florida but I'd also bet the league would stick us with Bama.

Is it two? In my midday Saturday haze, I'm running West Viriginia's schedules through my head and I think Pitt is the only team they always play twice.

GreThe problem is that everyone in the SECE considers UK a rival.

Well, we are the only school to play them more that 200 times, so there should be no question we are the top in conference rival:

Opponent .Wins Losses
Tennessee .146 .66
Vanderbilt .134 .44
Georgia .113 .25
Alabama .101 .36
Florida .90 .33
Mississippi .98 .13
LSU .80 .24
Auburn .85 .17

The ACC plays a 16 game conference schedule and Duke/ UNC play twice every year. They have divisions for football but not basketball. There is a way to do it .

Yup. Seems like the ACC does 2 rivalries and 3 rotators for the extra 5 games.

Meh. I'm not sure I wanted it for the whole season, I was just fed up with the seeding for the SEC Tournament.

But if you want one protected East/West crossover to keep the schedule more balanced, choosing the permanent football rival is not a bad place to start.
