The rumor going around is Mark Dantonio leaving Michigan State to take the South Carolina job. The reason it carries weight is because Dantonio played for and graduated from SC. Who wouldn't want to coach their alma mater?

Now for the can or worms...

If Dantonio leaves Michigan State, how far up on their list is Butch Jones? Would Butch, his staff, and their wives leave us to head back home? If I'm not mistaken, the majority of this staff and their wives are from Michigan.

Could be a very eventful off season if the Dantonio chip falls.

Just answering the hypothetical...

If Jones and crew didn't leave for Michigan then they won't leave for MSU.

Look, I'm still pulling for Jones but his resume' so far doesn't warrant major attention from any (already) contender.
A rebuild given his recruiting? Yes but not someone already on the scene.

Can't see it happening. Butch has worked his Arse off to get this team primed to compete for championships here and wouldn't leave before he gets to at least have a run or two with a more seasoned team.

And to the argument that the Big whatever is an easier conference.... That may be true but it is not nearly as true as it was a few years ago.

Besides, you could live in beautiful east TN or move to the rust belt. Not gonna happen.

they might leave as apparently this coaching staff can't beat the big 2 florida and now bama (according to most we have already lost saturday and it's ok with them) but it shouldn't be.

Do you really think Butch Jones would be that high on anybody's candidate list at this point? Not trying to insult him as I like Butch, and want him to succeed, but given our blown leads against OU, UF, and ARK, I would be shocked if Michigan State had him at the top of their list.

I love Butch Jones and think he and the staff are doing a fine job even with the mistakes they've made along the way. However, if he were to leave to another job, I'm confident he has set us up well and has made the job very inviting for another top coach and staff to step in and have immediate success.

Or in my humble opinion, he was never really pursued by them.

I think he was on their list, but nowhere near #1. If Harbaugh and a couple other names say no, Butch's name was in the conversation imo.

Remember, Kiffin was not USC's #1, #2, or #3. But, he was on their list. We know how that played out.

Any power 5 school? I would venture to guess that there are alot of power 5 schools that would hire Butch Jones.

Well I guess I shouldn't have worded it that way, but given the success that Michigan State has had in Dantonio's career, I think they would aim for someone more proven. That's the point I was trying to make. Jones is still a question mark for us. However, I will admit, it would be much easier to contend in the Big 10 compared to the SEC. I hope Jones stays put at least for the fact of continuity, recruiting, and potential. He can win, but he needs to correct his mistakes in order to be successful.

Before I read one more post here's my statement. No one is coming after Butch. Not on that level

I'm not saying he is #1 on their list. They would shoot higher, no doubt. But, I think he would be on their list. Down around #5 maybe?

No one is coming after Butch??? The man has cost us a couple of games, but He can coach. He has definitely improved our football program.

Butch is not a bad coach. He just hasn't proven that he can be a great coach. This conference will prove him one way or the other though.

I honestly don't even think butch was in their top 10-15. Their AD and boosters weren't messing around. Even if they had missed on a couple of names, they were looking to make a big hire and in no way would butch have fulfilled that requirement. I think they would have gone with an interim coach and wait it out than commit to a 3-5 year deal with a coach like butch.

Again this is just my opinion.

You may be right, I have no proof you are wrong.
