Cole Cubelic on Tennessee

He is new at American football, first time in the field in a big environment in a new country. Give the guy a break.
When is the last time you saw a punter who could punt with his left AND right foot. Dude is gonna be a weapon down the line.

That's the difference between how football guys see the game versus the average fan.

Like Cole I thought we had an impressive performance. Team looks loaded on both sides of the ball. If our d-line plays like that the entire season then we'll be in the playoffs. Typically there are concerns after week 1. I honestly saw none after yesterday. The few mistakes we made are easily correctable.

This is gonna be a fun season folks.
The average SEC fan is still calling Milton a horrible qb. He’s the only SEC QB with a win over a P5 team. I’m convinced they played vanilla against UVA and we’ll see Milton explode against Florida

I hate that Australian rules kicking motion. Why don’t we have a normal legitimate punter like we’ve always had?
Agree 100%. If it were resulting in more consistent punts, or any good punts at all, it would be one thing, but it ain’t. As of now our special teams coach is not looking like a genius.

Punter has to be better, hopefully he isn’t used much this season, and then the one punt he did execute, we fell into the end zone, overall special teams just needs to be tightened up, but all things that can be corrected
I have a feeling recruiting punters ain't gon be easy for the foreseeable future. We'll have to find them who bleed OR or want to win championships.

I don't understand it. What am I missing with all the motion based punting? Is it buying "hang time" for coverage? Is it just to mix up vs a block? I'm not seeing distances going up the past 6-8 years since it's been in vogue.

Why the shift to this from traditional punting?

It's easy for people to buy into the massive hype storm since Clemson. Milton played well in the OB. But, he literally has started only 9 times at 2 schools in 6 years(5?). And really only the CU game did he shine. Well, VU too but we shouldn't count high schools.
Milton really has a lot to prove this year as an elite QB. The data says it's not a given. So, a lot of people are gonna say "show me". And I totally understand that.

Outside that one series where all 3 throws missed open receivers, I thot JM played pretty awesome against a lower tier opponent. UF will tell the tale.

I think the thought is, by running left or right, and killing a little time, you get the gunner’s farther down field. This should prevent big returns, but you have to keep the ball in play for it to work.

That's all I could figure. And maybe it makes the rush have to think and consider various approaches and angles. I guess if you can burn a ½sec or 1sec then the coverage improves and you don't need Ray Guy punting for you.

Yeah, keeping the ball in the field helps usually!

I think we will see how Milton responds toa loud stadium, but I’m doing my best to not make a knee jerk reaction but that was the slowest and non athletic UF team I’ve seen since the Zook years. Even if we say their RB’s are good, that o-line was terrible, only 1 threat outside and a QB that is very stationary in comparison. I mean I think any honest UF fan would tell you, 5 W’s might be a stretch. And I get it, it’s been 20 years since we’ve won in the swamp and they always find a magical way to beat us, but I just don’t think their roster and weapons are close to us, and that was a Utah team that never was really threatened with a backup platoon at QB.

Tennessee punters have occasionally used the rugby style punt for at least 20 years. It has been around forever. As mentioned, the roll out buys time to get gunners downfield. It also carries the "chaos" theme over to special teams. An athletic punter can throw a fake or run for the first down himself. I bet we catch at least two teams sleeping on special teams this year and the punter pass/run goes for big plays.

I like the way JH explained it in his presser when asked about the punting , ( paraphrasing) he’s said it’s like your golf shot sometimes . We all know that’s %100 accurate. No matter how much we practice , some days we just slice or hook the ball . I’ve never been asked to hit a straight ball in front of 70k screaming fans either so im not to worried , they will figure it out .

TENNESSEE: More impressive win than folks will say.
I agree with this.

The miscues in the first half are entirely to be expected in Game 1 of the season. But a generation of TN teams would have let Virginia hang around until late in the 3rd quarter in a game like this. This team didn't. DL and OL impressed. Milton managed game perfectly. RBs ran north to south. Great tackling overall. Mature, confident and composed performance. Great win.

After testing and looking back at everything, special teams was by far our weakest unit that raises some eyebrows. However, by towards the end of the 3rd, we seemed to play looser and less worried. So I have faith this staff will turn it around. Florida is still my number 1 “okay where are we, truly?” test.

I thought the punting improved dramatically in the second half. He played 3 years professional Australian rules football and he claims to have third-strongest arm on the team so I expect they’ll use him for a fake punt or 2 this season.

If he does fake, I hope he does it better than he punts. Part of my problem is I HATE THE ASSUE PUNT STYLE!! I think that a run of more than 3 steps before the kick should be a penalty and no penalty if the punter is tackled unless it is way after the kick - not in the act as who knows if he might not run,

Interesting take on Campbell then. The guys on Dave Hookers cast were so critical of him. They claimed he was the main reason we whiffed on that 1st 4th and 1. The truth is maybe more in the middle?
Not sure I'd put a lot of stock in anything Hooker's staff comes up with, especially Caleb Calhoun.

TENNESSEE: Thought QB looked great. Couple balls he took a tad off but still gassing some he doesn't need to. RB room loaded. Had a few good misses with ball placement. OL better than I thought with C out. The rotation there will help. Coleman was awesome at LT. Need to get 54 on the other side. WRs are legit. The DL exceeded expectations. Pass rush was big time. 37 & 30 were ripping off the edge. 9 made plays all over. 2nd & 3rd level took themselves out of a few plays but easily correctable. Liked what I saw on both sides. More impressive win than folks will say.
I'm guessing Cubelic meant "Campbell" at LT.
And which position did Mincey play through most of the game?
But PFF grades seem to disagree on Coleman/Campbell's performance.

OT Gerald Mincey #54 — 73.5 (39 plays)

OT Jeremiah Crawford — 67.1 (57 plays)

TE Jacob Warren — 65.2 (36 plays)

RG Javontez Spraggins — 64.2 (74 plays)

LT John Campbell Jr. — 61.6 (59 plays)

C Ollie Lane — 60.9 (48 plays)

OG Jackson Lampley —59.4 (22 plays)

RT/C Dayne Davis — 59.1 (27 plays)

TE McCallan Castles — 58.1 (45 plays)
