You popped that cork just a little too soon, my friend. The batch wasn't completely done, and it just needed a little bit more time to age.
Dook did in fact show they had the better team, they just choked on a level for the ages and gave the game away to a team they were dominating for 80-90% of the game.
In the end tho, Houston showed why they were really a pretender and not a contender. To win a National Championship you have to have a guy(s) that can get you a bucket when you absolutely have to have one.
Houston showed 4 times in a row they didn't have that guy. Defense can carry you a long, long way, but to win a title you have to have an offensive that is capable of getting a score when you have to have it. Definitely have to have one that can get you a bucket in 4 cracks at it!
Not only could Houston not make a bucket in their last 4 tries at it, but they couldn't even manage to get a shot off, ffs.
- 1:21 – Joseph Tugler stripped in the paint
- 0:52 – LJ Cryer lost the ball under pressure
- 0:26 – Sharp dribbled the ball off his leg in a triple-team trap
- 0:00 – Sharp dropped the ball on the final play, unable to recover without traveling
Oof.....
Houston still hasn't figured that offense part out in terms of winning a championship.
Neither have we TBO.
I think Barnes has learned a valuable lesson over the last couple of years. I believe you see more of an emphasis on scoring next year. That's not to say we won't still have a top defesne, just that hopefully we don't sacrafice the lions portion of our offense for it.
For example, I don't think you see a guy next year that starts whose main goal is just to play defense and not even be looking to score.
Similarly, if I had to bet, I'd say next year Houston has at least one guy that they can look to like Florida had in Clayton Jr. that has the onions to go get that bucket in crunch time.
