Colorado Postgame Report

we
I re-watched the game this morning (thanks @Freak ). I specifically looked at who was matched up with Wright. I didn't log it by minutes, but I'd guess Bailey was far and away the minutes leader guarding him. I didn't realize that Wright played all 40 minutes. Before I break it down, I'd say no one did a poor job on him, especially considering several of our guys are freshmen in their first game, and he's an upperclassman. It was clear as day Barnes stressed that if Colorado was going to win the game, it wasn't going to be because of Wright. There was almost always help waiting around the corner if Wright drove. Pons was usually that guy. They were also pressuring him full court a lot and face guarding when he didn't have the ball. Wright had to have been frustrated by the end of the game.

Here is more of a breakdown of how it shook out:

In the 1st half, Bailey started out on him.
When Keon came in, he took a turn
Then when Springer checked in, he got his chance. He got burned once and Barnes immediately went back to Bailey on the next possession
Keon had next crack. He got lost and I think forgot he was guarding him and left him wide open. That eventually led to Keon being out of position on a switch, leaving his feet and allowing I think Horne to go right to the rim. Barnes was furious.
After that play, Barnes went right back to Bailey for the remainder of the half, except for 1 possession where Vescovi took him, but that might have been because of a switch

In the 2nd half, Barnes switched it up even more. At one point, Josiah James and Keon alternated about every 1-2 possessions guarding Wright. In all in the 2nd half, I counted 10 changes in who guarded Wright. But in the last 5 minutes, it was almost exclusively Bailey on him. Again, no one did a poor job, but Bailey was consistent all night. I saw him get beat once by Wright which led to a foul, but other than that there was really nothing to speak of. For those wondering why Bailey got so many minutes, I'd guess it was for this exact reason. Yeah, he hit some 3's which was awesome. But we know Barnes emphasizes defense, and he clearly trusted Bailey over his young guys in this matchup. Bailey's minutes will obviously go down quite a bit from 35 as the freshmen get more experience against high major talent, but after a 2nd watch, I came away very impressed with his overall game.

So you’ll wouldn’t agree that Bailey is the 5th best perimeter defender I’m guessing?

That’s above my pay grade. I’d argue he was our best guard overall on Tuesday, with the caveat that Johnson obviously showed flashes of unlimited potential. Have no idea how it will shake out in the end though.

You should go back and watch, JJJ is the one doing most of the communication on the offensive end. His basketball IQ is one of his best attributes, his instincts are fine, your assessment is wrong I feel.

It’s not his IQ, he’s slow to react on the offensive end. He’s had issues since he got here with it. And if he’s doing most of the communication on the offensive end it wasn’t good communication then because we scored 56 points and shot 36%.

Chris - Wasn’t directed at you specifically, rather the masses. He’s a player that shows the toughness and excitability of Maymon. But I understand the excitement around the new blue chips. They look very promising.

I think Springer is going to be the exact type guard we need to win tournaments. He's a physical athletic kid, much more physical than any of our guards outside of JJJ. Tuesday was the 1st time I saw him play, while his numbers were not great I came away much more impressed with his production in limited minutes as that of Bailey getting the most minutes of the night. I really like Springer, more so than both Bailey and Vescovi in the long run.
I have hope for his future. I like him as a prospect. But judging by what I saw him do during the game, I didn't see what you saw. Was not good on defense. Got bailed out on a call on a questionable decision attacking the basket. I didn't see any evidence of a "physical, athletic guard" in that game. I hope he shows that element next game.

No problem. I didnt take it that way. Just wanted to make sure you didn't just miss it in my post.

I think junior year Jeronne Maymon is probably a good comparison. Post-Pearl version who imagined himself as a perimeter player, and pre-meniscus injury that caused him to miss his senior year and zapped his explosiveness his rSR season.

I think he was talking overall talent, not just defense
Not sure why I interpreted it as defense...if we are going off one game though he played better than Springer or Johnson hands down. Now if you want to argue those guys have more potential/talent that’s different, but same could be said for Corey Walker verse ORN, no?
