At approximately the 20:20 mark (Butch Jones Show Week 5 (Sept. 29) - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics) of the most recent episode of the "Butch Jones Show,” Butch made an interesting comment regarding the significance of the Vol Walk as an expression of pre-game support to our football team:

“Our fan base is the best in the country. . . . Really, home field advantage is your crowd participation. . . . I told our football team you can never take for granted playing in Neyland Stadium and our fans. . . . We’re going to get it right; I know I keep saying it but it’s a process. . . .

[After Bob Kesling observes that “You don’t allow [the players] to wear headsets and they have to associate with the fans,"] Butch states that “It’s an honor and it’s a privilege to be able to participate in the Vol Walk and that’s what I’ve told our football team. We’ve started a tradition now that, with our scout teams, we call “Earn the Right.” It’s based on their weekly performance in practice on the scout teams whether they will go on the Vol Walk and dress for the game. And I tell you what, the competition has increased two-fold and it [i.e. the Vol Walk and fan support] sets the temperament for the game.”

He's investing in emotional bank accounts that's for sure. Hopefully the deposits draw a good return down the road.

Yes, indeed. It's all part of the "win their hearts and minds" campaign. It is essential, particularly in lean times, and Butch is an absolute master at generating positive PR.

I'm starting to like this guy. I really want him to be the coach that gets us back where we are suppose to be.

He could make a career in marketing that's for sure. I'm rooting for him. I'm mainly interested in how he adjusts right now. He seems to have a good overall plan.

Let's stay behind our team and our coach no matter what happens this season. He's laying the foundation and my humble opinion up is that we have the right guy this time! Go Vols.

Honest to God if we had a packed stadium the rest of the way out recruits and journalists around the country would take notice. That's something that no other team could use to recruit against us. I mean hell, imagine that place full... as bad as we are right now. That's a fan base that's hungry to win. That's a fan base recruits want to play for. Will it happen? Who knows. But it would be something that people would notice.

"Earn the right"...I love it! Keeping things in perspective. I don't think CBJ will have any problems with players thinking they are bigger than the program which seems to be an issue with a lot of kids these days.

Any other coach says things like this and it's "coach speak"

CBJ says it, and its "Butch gets it". Lol

He has said on at least one occasion that Team 117 is buying into his message much more quickly than his first teams at Central Michigan and Cincinnati. He also realizes that the collective pride of both his team and the supporting fan base is badly bruised.

That's the big difference with this team and his previous teams, before his teams already had a winning message when he got there. This team is eager to buy in and change to a winning message. I support Butch 100% and hope he is successful, but he is facing his biggest challenge as a coach so far I am afraid.

GBO!

I am maybe a sucker for some heartfelt coach speak, but I cannot help but believe that Butch will right this ship and sail it into glory. I will probably stroke out before that day as I lack patience, but I think he gets it done.

When's the last time you heard the sentiment that Tennessee was something special? Serious question.

In a way similar to Butch, I would say Bruce Pearl.

Dools and Kiffin weren't/ aren't the same type of people as Jones and Pearl regarding the outward passion for UT.

Pearl-like as a salesman and exhorter. Has much better character and integrity though.

The big question I have is why is this even an issue? Any head coach that does not honor the traditions and the importance of UT's history in CFB should be fired on the spot. Butch understood that right up front. That should be a part of the due diligence of the hiring process. Before slamming Kiffin and Dools, even though they deserve it - understand that Fulmer also let the players use ear buds with their MP-3's/pods during the Vol Walk. It's a slippery slope when you stop paying attention to detail.

I wish the players knew how much most of us would give to be in the Vol Walk and Run through the T just 1 time.

My husband and I have had the privilege of running through the power T and let me tell ya, it was very memorable and to this day gives me cold chiils... We love UT and support our Coaches and Team to the end!! I stood there looking all around that huge stadium, breath taking to say the least..

GO VOLS..
