Commodity shortages

Fine, have slower shipping and pay higher prices.

This isn't complicated.
That creates HUGE knock on effects. Knock on effects we are currently dealing with now that have lead to this issue. You are just compounding the issue.

Simple answer: our supply/transportation cycle system is broken.

Ships can’t dock and offload themselves and that offloaded cargo can’t transport itself to its destinations thereby freeing up more cargo offload space on the docks. Rinse-repeat.
I guess my question should've been, why is the system all of a sudden broken. Why the shortage of dock workers? Crane operators? Truck drivers?

What do you mean? There are multiple international shippers. It's not like relying on China for semiconductors.

Truck drivers shortage can be indirectly blamed on the new CDL regulations that came up earlier this year.

And again, something else that hasn't been discussed by mainstream media or economists or most people is simply demographics. We have more older people retiring and fewer younger people filling in the gaps.

I've known a few drivers that have given it up because of the regulations on the industry. They were making good money, but the strict regs now aren't worth it.

I think @hog88 may have some better insight.

The hours of service regulations and computer logs linked to GPS kill paid by the mile drivers. Couple that with the increased enforcement its just worth it for these guys. Most of the professionals that took pride in being an OTR driver do something else now and we’re left with the ones that pretty much can’t do anything else. Or the serial killers.

Can Joe save his Christmas nightmare? Biden will tell Walmart, FedEx and UPS to up their services and push LA's port to run 24/7 at White House meeting to try and prevent supply chain holiday catastrophe

President Joe Biden reached a deal on Wednesday with unions and business leaders from Walmart, FedEx, UPS and others to expand operations at one of the country's largest shipping ports in a bid to ease supply chain bottlenecks that are driving up consumer prices and emptying store shelves.

Once implemented the proposed changes could increase output by more than 3,500 shipping containers per week, White House officials said.

Widget A normally takes 2 days to get to the manufacturer, but now takes 4. Does this mean the final product widget A was part of takes two days longer? No.

Why?

Because it's not just widget A, its b, c, and D too. So those two days add up to 8. Then it has to get from the manufacturer to a distributor, plus another 2 days. From distributor to wholesale, another two days.

Very little happens simultaneously, so you have a constant 2 day (or whatever) knock on, at each step of the process.

When people have to wait 2 months for stuff that is "off the shelf" that causes huge issues with the whole distribution line.

What does this have to do with the Jones Act? You know, keeping foreign ships out of US shipping?

Just in time logistics is a scam - probably dreamed up in a school of business. The one time hit sure did wonders for some CEOs who used up stocks without replacing them. It reminds me a lot of the Reagan era "over funded" pension plans, and pensions now being paid out by government pension insurance.
