Compact SUV Purchase

Apparently I do. I don't totally get the whole-foods-and-reusable-bags aspect (if you will) of the vehicle, but apparently that label is out there. While I like it, my wife REALLY likes it. I think the fact that the cover of the Forester pamphlet that we picked up had a woman arriving in her Forester for a beach cleanup must have sealed the deal for her :). I've already made good use of a few of those jokes.

Birmingham or others - I have a question about Edmunds. As I mentioned earlier, I am looking at the Subaru Forester. Edmunds lists the true market value for the 2011 model I am looking at as just below invoice. That seems out of line with most other vehicles that I have looked at, so I am trying to figure out how much I can trust the Edmunds number in negotiations. I had figured that 3-4% above dealer cost would be a good deal for me when going into this, but the Edmunds TMV sits at only 2% above dealer costs (basically the holdback). Does that seem off? I am trying to get a decent handle on the numbers before I actually sit down to negotiate a price...

The internet sites actually have very limited benefits. I've never quite understood why so many people think that their car pricing is gospel since not a single one of them will buy a car for any price, much less what they claim its worth.
The best way to get a deal on any car is to negotiate a lowball offer then leave. The sales manager will walk you out the door with his lowest offer.

Congrats! You'll love it. Especially when bad weather comes around, they will go just about anywhere.

Are you referring to used car pricing? Does NADA provide anything other than invoice and MSRP for new cars?

As for Edmunds and TMV, should TMV be viewed as the average negotiated cost before local dealer fees (non-invoiced) such as documentation fees and perhaps dealer prep fees?

TT - I've bought and negotiated but not bought several new cars with the TMV and it is attainable. It it pre-fee. Doc fees I've found very difficult to negotiate away. Other fees are negotiable.

I saw your post on the forum - that kydx guy (or whatever his name is) is a Edmunds "guru". They know their shizz.

Bottomline, don't get caught up in getting the best deal known to man. I'd use Edmunds to get a view of what's possible then get a deal you feel comfortable with and move on. For me it helps me know what's possible so I know I'm not getting screwed. I don't have to get bottom dollar but I don't want to grossly over pay either.

congrats..throw up a pic

We went with the Dark Gray Metallic color with Platinum interior. My favorite feature is probably the all weather package, which includes heated seats, side mirrors, and windshield where your wiper blades rest. I hate trying to deice wiper blades. It has a backup camera and auto-dim mirror...I like the auto-dim mirror - my wife wanted the backup camera. It's the basic 4 cylinder, as you can see no turbo.

bumping this since the wife and I went to the Subaru dealership today and looked at the Forrester and Outback. It appeared the Outback had more back seat space which we'll need since she got a pretty big baby seat.

I see TT got the Forrester but has anyone had any experience with the 2011 Outback? It has everything we need and seems to be a great ride. Just haven't found any real negatives which scares me a little :)

the 2011 Outback is pretty much identical to the 2010. Don't let the absence of negative reviews worry you. A good car is a good car.

2011 Subaru Outback

Cons

Lacks agility, numb-on-center steering, poor base stereo, fussy controls on upper trims.

seems like it's highway mileage could be better as well

The Hyundais are great but I'd only warn to buy one if you are committed to keeping it for a long while as the resale values are awful. Can't beat that warranty though.

In the past the resale was horrible. Look up Kelley Blue Book values on the certified hyundais now. In some cases the certified used cars are more than a brand new one??? The used car market is way out of wack right now. I've never seen used car prices so high. I would always buy a two or three year old car. However, right now In a lot of cases it is better to buy new.

Thank cash for clunkers for that. Hyundais resale might start going up in a few years time, but I wouldn't be so sure just yet. Honda was making awesome stuff for fifteen years before it became generally accepted that their cars were teh best. Hyundai has a way to go.

Looking at possibly purchasing a 2008 jeep patriot limited. Insight from anyone that has owned, or currently owns a patriot would be greatly appreciated. Have also considered GMC Terrain and Chevy Equinox, I need something that has a little room, but still gets great gas mileage and looks nice. Would like to spend 20,000 or less as this will be a work vehicle. Thoughts on vehicles mentioned or other possible options ?

look at the Buick Enclave...
I've had them as rental cars and thy are really nice

yeah I saw that but the we're coming from a Liberty and Xterra so I'm not sure the mileage/handling will be that noticeable. Oh well, I guess if all goes well we should have a new one soon. At least I'll make my hippie brother happy

buy some Birkenstocks and a "coexist" bumper sticker and you can infiltrate a Code Pink rally

It's funny, because I abhor all things hippy. I just got over it with regard to the Subaru image. I don't even understand it. I really like the Forrester...that's enough for me.

I have a friend who went with the 2010 Outback last year. He and his wife are very happy with it.

Same thing happened to me. Just a note - the pzev will make the engine idle louder that you would expect it to when first starting up. It goes away once you drop it into gear. Just be aware so you aren't too concerned if you notice it...it's normal.

picked up the Outback tonight and it's really a nice car. Wife is happy and we got what I think is a very good deal. Have a road trip to SC this weekend so we'll see how it does on that

4 Year bump!

I see the rav4 was recommended a bit in here, how is the new design? I like the look of it much better, but wonder if there are any issues with the new remodel?

Also considering Nissan Rogue/Murano and Mazda CX5.

KKB is not the best to use. You'll almost never get anywhere close to what KBB says
