Computer specialists, recommend a new computer in this thread (A VN Classic)

the problem with the Toshiba's is that the cooling fan is at the bottom of the laptop so when you have it on a desk or something the fan is blocked. they overheat like crazy and eventually turn off. it's a huge pain in the ass.

Just get what you know you want the Alienware M17 so you have a laptop way more powerful than you would ever need and you can brag to your friends about it.

computers have come a long way since your first yr in law school I can assure you. The PC I built 4yrs ago ran about $2k and was top of the line then. It's an entry level (at best) in today's world.

I use my HP laptop for more than a law student/lawyer ever will and it is more than adequate.

i helped get everything going for my uncle's new HP laptop (about 3 months old now). That machine is sweet. Everything about it is an improvement from the last HP I dealt with just two years ago and I wouldn't be against buying an HP these days. It seems far better than the VAIOs. I'm a fan of Dell, but I've always felt their desktops were much better than the laptops. HP would not be a bad way to go. I'd still take the Mac though.

Lenevo Thinkpad X200 or the Macbook.... Toshiba is not the best computer out there by any means.

Dell Vostro 1310 is also a great laptop.

I love my Eee. :) The wife seems to have fallen out of love with it.

Turns out it is only really good for travel, or a quick e-mail check. She needs more screen space than the little 7" screen of our 701.

OK...so I'm actually willing to take advice. I'm thinking about getting my wife a machine for Christmas...she doesn't need much at all. She needs to be able to install itunes on it and have a functional internet browser. The heaviest games she will play will be those within the web browser. I'm thinking about a laptop...but she would probably be just as happy with a desktop.

Can anyone recommend something that is as cheap as her computing needs are few? Reliability is a must, since she is sick and tired of the current desktop she has to use when my laptop isn't around.

Looking for a cheap web machine? Can't go too wrong with a cheap acer, or any of the new small form factor machines by Asus or MSI.

The only two companies that make a reliable laptop anymore are Lenovo and Apple. Period. (I say this sorrowfully -- what has happened to the laptop industry in recent years sucks.) If you hate Lenovo, then get a Macbook or Macbook Pro.

Running XP only on an Apple laptop sort of defeats the point, though. It's like buying a Ferrari to drive to the grocery store twice a week. On second thought, just get a Dell.

I ended up buying a Dell PDA. It's working great. Thanks for the advice.
