Concerned about LSU but...

A team as good as everyone on the west coast likes to imagine Cal is should blow out wretched jokes like the Huskies, especially at home.
Even most recent national champions have had poor showings against poor teams at some point during the season.

Not being pushed to overtime at home by garbage like Washington. Find me any of the past ten National Champions tested to that extent by dreck like UW on their home field.

I won't limit it to home games, but here goes... National champions over the past 10 years with close games against teams without winning records.

The '04 USC Trojans
3 point win over Stanford (finished 4-7)
5 point win over UCLA (finished 6-6)

The '03 USC Trojans
None, but did lose to 8-6 California

The '03 LSU Tigers
None, but did lose to 8-5 Florida at home

The '02 Ohio State Buckeyes
4 point win over Cincinnati (finished 7-7)
11 point win over Northwestern (finished 3-9)
7 point win over Illinois (finished 5-7)

The '00 Oklahoma Sooners
5 point win over Oklahoma State (3-8)

The '99 Florida State Seminoles
3 point win over Clemson (6-6)

The '98 Tennessee Volunteers
8 point win over Auburn (3-8)

The '97 Michigan Wolverines
None, but close wins over mediocre (nearly .500) Notre Dame and Iowa teams at home

The '96 Florida Gators
7 point win over Vanderbilt (2-9)
Loss to Florida State

The '94 Nebraska Cornhuskers
10 point win over Oklahoma (6-6)

And that is holding Cal to the national championship standard, which I don't think they deserve, unless a lot of things happen to fall their way before that.

I'd say Washington could be considered better than Stanford and Vanderbilt. Probably Northwestern, and maybe Illinois. They are terrible, nonetheless. Cal is the only team to date that has been a complete and total pushover for Tennessee.

Marshall, Memphis and Georgia in the 4th quarter.

Although I think that whole thing is due more to our inability to eat the clock rather than the other teams being that good. Air Force is my case in point.

I forgot about Memphis. They are a one-win team, however. You can't say Georgia was a pushover. They were winning at the start of the fourth, I believe. I wouldn't say Marshall was a pushover, either. They kept it relatively close until we wore out their starters. Cal couldn't even come close to touching us for three quarters with their starters in.

How many times did we force Air Force to punt? I'll give you a hint. Take the number of times we forced Cal to punt and subtract 60.

Either way... IMO the only reason we lost to Florida, and haven't blown out other teams is no run game.

That doesn't explain why Cal was such a pushover. Did the run game suddenly disappear after that win? Or is Cal's defense way worse than Air Force's? Also, I edited my previous post.

Cal was a pushover because of a mismatch between our WR's and their DB's. As soon as we called off the dogs, the offense stopped working.

Cal does have a better defense than Air Force though. We scored less because Air Force is an option team and eats up a lot of clock because they run all the time.

So, there you go hat. No specific instances of teams being pushed to OT at home, but many national champions have had unreasonably close games against poor competition.

You listed Florida's loss to Florida State in '96. Do you remember who the Gators played in the Sugar Bowl for the National Championship?

I also didn't realize 11 points was unreasonably close.
