I know this sounds like a huge hot take given how it ended here with him, but it is amazing how close Butch got to "making it" here without doing it. He had a shot in 2015 and again in 2016. He isn't a good coach at all, and I don't think any success he had would have been sustained, but he was so, so close to having great seasons in 2015 and 2016. Maybe even better than the 2022 season.I think Butch had 3 pretty bad significant accomplishments while being here. Unfortunately, these get overshadowed by the terrible 2017 season, Butch’s embarrassing comments during press conferences, our loss to Vandy with the Sugar Bowl on the line, and his smoking the cigar with Bama after they beat us at Neyland.
1) Ended the Florida losing streak that went back to 2005.
2) Beat UGA in back to back years (I know they were not as good back then but still a very nice accomplishment).
3) Won 3 consecutive bowl games, which is pretty tough to do.
You could maybe count the 2013 win over South Carolina too, as I believe it was our first win against a top 10 team in years (I think they were Top 10 in either the Coach’s Poll or the AP Poll but not both).
His inability in 2016 to get the effort and chemistry from 2015 was the beginning of his downfall IMO, at least publicly. That 2015 team was a lot of fun, but those guys must’ve read way too many press clippings that off-season. I think there was some infighting and lack of trust going on as well. I think Dobbs was a helluva band-aid for those squads .I know this sounds like a huge hot take given how it ended here with him, but it is amazing how close Butch got to "making it" here without doing it. I don’t know if Id say beneath them, but they had 12 bowl appearances in like 16 seasons before Anderson’s last year, so making a bowl wasn’t exactly a rare or historic feat. I wouldn’t say it’s beneath them, though. I think it’s more amusing because it Butch Jones and we know his schtick. It's Arkansas State. You think that's somehow "beneath" that program? I'm no Butch Jones fan but it's a reach to criticize that.
