When it comes to people in the country without proper documentation, the majority of them didn't cross the Mexican border at all. Most of them came to the United States legally - but overstayed their visa. According to figures published by the Department of Homeland Security, about 700,000 travelers to the United States overstayed their visas in the fiscal year of 2017 and about 600,000 of them are believed to still be somewhere in the United States today. By contrast, less than 300,000 apprehensions were made along the southern border in 2017, according to Customs and Border Protection.
