Conservative Playcalling (merged)

Where are the designed runs for Nico? Why haven't we seen one play where he just takes off running???? I get the injury aspect, but he is getting pressured and hit anyway. A designed run here and there would make things much harder on their defense.
They had one on the forth that picked up a crucial 1st down. It led to the final FG.

A perfect example of the difference between coaching and armchairing. Hype Coached his best game since he got here. Realizing that the Soh

Perfect example of the difference between real coaching and armchairing. Here’s what happened. Hype knew starting the 3rd qt that this was in the bag. It’s called scaling back. They ran the ball which not only kills the clock it will let you take an occasional shot down the field. The only reason they scored is we started rushing 3 in the 4th. Who cares if they eat up 4 or 5 minutes off the clock driving down the field when your up 3 scores. When we dialed the pressure up they couldn’t do s***. I believe this was Hypes best coaching job to date. We finally have the hoss’s to play conservative. We lucky to have him!!

Nico still has a ways to go to become elite. Yeah I said it. Unless he improves tremendously, I don’t see us as a playoff team.

I kinda feel ya but that 66 yard pass he tossed looked pretty darn elite. Give Nico credit that he didn’t get rattled even after losing both starter tackles. Was good experience for him. Also not his fault Heupe went into clock management mode in the second half.

I think having 2 turnovers in the 1st half due to protection and OL injuries had a lot to do with playcalling too.

We didn’t just win. We controlled that game throughout and never let them really get good momentum. Even after their first TD and they got the ball back, our D slammed the door shut.
I agree. After the first quarter I don’t think I had any major concerns that we would win the game. Once it became obvious the game plan was to run the clock, pick our spots, and play total control defense I relaxed and enjoyed the absolute slobber knocking!

I think that CJH demonstrated respect and mercy towards Oklahoma by transitioning to a one-dimensional offensive play calling. It was clear early in the third quarter that the Sooners offense could not produce. Opening up our playbook would have resulted in an embarrassing lopsided loss. I don't fault him for his decision. Make no mistake, this game was about establishing the run game against a tremendous defense. Time will tell that our offense will be okay moving forward.

For most of the game we played without our 2 starting tackles. I thought Nico did fine under the circumstances. Georgia beat Kentucky by 3 are they playoff contenders. Beck had a similar game that Nico had is he elite.

I have been thinking the same thing. We would have won by 30 if Nico had added another threat outside our single back. We might have kept OU off the field long enough that they never would have found the end zone.

I get that we couldn’t pass block, but surely Nico is smart enough to read option.

Good thing you are not on the committee 99% of America now sees us as a playoff team… did you want Nico to go rouge ? He ran the plays that heup called and heup protected his young qb in a game that the defense dominated… that OU defense was nasty I thought the Qb run was there more often but i understand why Heup called the game the way that he did.

This. I actually agree. Nico hasn't shown he's elite...yet. But we are still a playoff team. And I think he will show he's elite with more experience.
This is actually exciting to me as we have jimmies and joes all over the field. We are so used to relying on one or two guys to carry the load because we didn’t have quality players and depth in multiple positions of need. Still need more depth in areas like the O-Line but still we have multiple avenues to victory now.

Folks saying Nico isn’t elite are correct. However, I view that as a positive because good players grow way more during the season rather than out of season. There is no replacement for live game reps. We have already seen glimpses of what he can do and he will continue to learn and grow through the season. He just learned a whole lot last night against one of the best defenses we will see all year.

Another good point: Nico knows he is young and treading deep into league play. He has total faith in Heupel who is literally in his ear giving him guidance during live games. He is learning and will continue to grow. Heupel will give him more leeway as he develops.

Nico has also gotten so many big plays called back this season already… it seems like every broken play dart he throws comes back… some of yall fans will never be happy… I heard all week how heup needed to prove he can win an sec night road game just for yall to still complain when he does… he knows they could play better but find a way to win… the bye is at a good time let’s get healthy and prepare for this next stretch of the season…

It is concerning that he doesn't feel the pressure better as yet. There are going to be times when pulling the ball down and taking the sack in necessary. Trying to throw it with a defender all over you that late is a sure turnover. Hopefully, Halzle and Ellerbee can address this in the off week.

I think when it became obvious that the D was on fire and we dodged giving up points after 2 turnovers, he was willing to run the clock and get out with the W.
Yep. I think Josh decided after the first few series that Oklahoma couldn’t score enough to beat us and he didn’t want to subject Nico to a lot of needless punishment on the road. Some of y’all forget that the starting LT was out and we had reserves blocking a really good DE on the blind side and they were struggling with him. No sense in getting your freshman QB killed by taking chances if you can beat them in other ways.

Personally I think it was a great win. Showed we can beat good teams in different ways. Want to get in a track meet? We can accommodate. Want to get into a knockdown, drag out, hit you in the mouth slugfest? We can do that too. That was some of the hardest hitting that I’ve seen from a UT team in a long time.
