Conservative Playcalling (merged)

C'mon Man. Heuple went conservative, up by 19, and didn't want to risk further injury on that crap field. Once I saw what He was doing, I just sat back and enjoyed it. A 10 point win on the SEC Road is good any day. The Vols won and Covered the spread. Everyone was happy.
Everyone except the posters on this site who have no clue that certain things that are done during a FB game by the coaches for a reason, like the 2nd half of last night. I didn't like it that Hyp shut down the O in the 2nd half and let the D finish it off but understood why, and it worked.

I think we have gotten spoiled by Josh’s offense. Fun to watch but sometimes you’ve got to adjust and use a different plan. Josh adjusted and it worked well. It was interesting to note that Oklahoma incurred a bunch of injuries, some maybe because of that crap turf and some because of our physicality.

I think having 2 turnovers in the 1st half due to protection and OL injuries had a lot to do with playcalling too.
Indeed. Also looked like OU’s d line and backers were taking away any running lanes that had been opening up in our first three games. They saw the film.

No reason to show everybody everything you got just yet, but I am interested what portions of the playbook Heupel is saving for Bama and Georgia.

I wasn’t happy with the way we went conservative either; but now that I have had overnight to sleep on it; I am starting to maybe see the wisdom. I see it as a natural evolution of the way he held out Nico last year. Heup knows how to develop quarterbacks; maybe better than anyone loose in the business. And I think with Nico, Heupel has continuously strives to place Nico in the best possible place to be successful; even if it limits the team early on. This was still Nico’s first road SEC game and it took place in a very hostile environment, with a noticeably depleted OL, and in a field that was a veritable skating rink.
There was no reason to put that entire game on Nico’s shoulders under those conditions; especially with the defense continuing to dominate.
I think many of us, myself included, keep forgetting that Nico is still a kid. And we have seen too many instances in which a young five star QB gets rushed into being the team’s expected savior way too early. Nico is a once in a generation talent. Heupel is going to do what is best for his player; even if that sometimes makes winning just a little more difficult. Nico is part of a team that develops together and isn’t just a one piece wunderkind. Heupel is Building a program; not Just a one off Team. I feel he is setting us up for long term success; not just a replay of 2022.

Keep building depth and keep developing players the right way. It limits instant gratification; but it builds lasting programs

Not looking good for our games against Alabama and Georgia. We held on to win against the 15th ranked team and, we really don’t know just how good they are/were.
Once Heupel saw that OK was not going to do anything against our D it became a very conservative game plan. We still haven't seen this team play at full speed for a full game but it's coming. Heupel is definitely showing he will trust and rely on his D and not get scared into a pass happy game.

CJH dialed it back in the second half, I think because he has a soft spot for Venables and the school. He beat the spread so Vol fans got paid AND got a win. No need for concern. Beating Kentucky by 1 AND having yet another top player arrested for driving problems in the same week IS a cause for concern. By the way ANYBODY believe the UGA QB has a shot at the Heisman now? LOL.

Heupel dialed it back because it was the smart move, but I predicted he wouldn't run it up if he could.

CJH has beaten the D Venable built at Clemson and now at Oklahoma. Safe to say CJH>CBV

But Nico has demonstrated he is good at getting down without getting hit when he runs and our offense is struggling mightily
Nico does a lot of things very well, but avoiding hits isn't one of them. He doesn't know how to slide. Or hasn't shown it yet. He rolls when he goes down exposing his back to tacklers. Or dives. He stays in bounds too long, allowing defenders to take shots at him. Did it twice against NC State. Let Sampson and Bishop do the running.

I haven't read all of the posts on this topic, so sorry if this is redundant. I think if JH was being conservative last night, it might have been because he didn't need to do anything more than what he did. No need to get on film things that will be needed later in the season so that AL, GA, etc. can plan for them.

I had hoped that the offensive performance of OU the first 3 games was some version of that thinking and that last night we would open it up with things UT had not seen. Obviously, turned out to be just wishful thinking on my part, but not a bad strategy if you can use it.

I will say though that they need to clean up the penalties. Way too many and some cost us points and basically gave OK that last TD after the defense stopped them on 4th down.
Two out of the last 3 years UT was the most penalized team in the conference. It’s an ongoing problem. I could understand if they were mostly pre-snap due to the tempo, but they’re not.

I get hwy Heupel went so vanilla in the 2nd half. My question is why not throw the WR screens and safe quick passes to keep the OU defense off balance without putting Nico in harms way.

Their DBs are fast and disciplined. We didn’t try a lot of screens last night because every time we did they hammered the receiver.

My guess is he didn’t want to take any more TFLs.

Lots of interesting points in here. But if you watch CJH and CBVs post game press conferences, it'll explain the play calling. For CJH it was obviously the plan from the get-go and only became more so once we got a two score lead in the first half. In his entire career at UT, he has never punted from the opposing 40-yard line with a short distance to get a first down.

This is Nico's first game against a real defense, 4 games into his first starting tour. But, Iowa...yeah, yeah....

Without a couple OL, teamates taking points off the board and stopping drives with penalties, errors, and two TOs of his own. And Nico knows he left points on the field; oh...that dumpster of a field. OU's D was getting really good penetration and pressure. With UT's D strangling them, that's pretty much the 5 or 6 reasons we were conservative.

In absolute last place, is CJH's "fondness for OU, Venables, that shade of red, or Depression-era sod houses. TN is where his football allegiance lies now.

Another thing too is that, while this was Nico’s fifth start; in three of those starts he has basically only played half a game. In terms of number of snaps, this kid is barely in his third game. A bunch of folks him to be a seasoned veteran but he isn’t yet. Heupel will want him to play within his game and within the system. Saturday the system called for a safe QB game plan.
I just Hope we get Heard and Campbell both back at 100% in two weeks. Nico will be limited if we don’t
