Cooking Gator

It is good fried, I think I used a Paula Dean recipe the last time I cooked it.

I'm just trying to stay out of the kitchen by putting it on the Kamado with some ribeyes. Looking online, it looks like tenderizing with a meat mallet and marinating are important...

I cook outside a lot on my weber kettle. If I'm making up sauces or if I want to saute some peppers, onions or mushrooms or scramble some eggs I use a cast iron skillet right over the coals. Works just like being on the stove. If you have a cast iron pot or skillet and some oil you could fry up the gator right there on your kamado and grill your ribeyes as well. You could also use a stainless steel pan if you don't have a cast iron.

I'm sure some diehard tailgaters will be serving gator before and after the game.

Doc, it's tomorrow at noon, not tomorrow night.

He really is a doctor, MD. Probably 10-12 years of school.Just saying.:)

There is no such thing as "Good" gator.

Throw it away and get yourself some "Buffalo Wild Wings"

If I'm getting wings, they will be from BKW.

Good advice here, I may try two different ways and will report back.

I don't know if this helps, but I've heard gator is like chitlins. Beat the hell out of it, and boil the shat out of it.

Is there a Razzoo's near you? I highly recommend their gator tail. Then you don't have to prepare it.

My best advice, based on our failed attempt, make sure FOR THE LOVE OF GOD that you get all the fat cut off. We didn't know this small detail, and almost turned the tailgate into a Vomitorium.

Thank you for giving me a much needed laugh lol

Best gator is a dead gator. :) That being said I have no clue how to grill it, I've only had it deep fried.

seems like you have to be a culinary masochist to wanna make Gator. Eat BBQ instead...

I caved... Going to fry it. Cut into small chunks, meat mallet, now soaking in buttermilk/salt/Cajun brine overnight. I added a little dried ghost pepper to the flour/cornmeal mix for fun.

Like most meats, let it come to room temp before doing any cooking. I've found that to be one of the best ways to guarantee a tender piece of meat.

as said before, its best fried... marinade is a must for grilling... its has a very bland taste,so seasoning is also a must... and it doesnt have a lot of fat in the meat itself,so it will dry out very quickly if not careful... Tail and jaw meat filets are the parts of the gator you want...
