for xmas i bought my step dad, who graduated with a phd after 13 years at ole miss, tickets for the cotton bowl. we got to dallas on the 1st and stayed at the double tree hotel off of market center (great place by the way). here's a few notes from the experience:
-all SEC fans are insane. we all have our own chants and we're all hoarse at the end of the game if we do the job right. we can all drink any other conference under the table and celebrate like its our birthday or new years every night. we scream and shout every song and cheer as if we are expecting at any second the grim reaper to tap us on the shoulder and say "come with me". it's a great brotherhood to be a part of.
-texas tech fans are cocky a-holes. from when i arrived in dallas, until the end of the first half, all i heard about was how many points TT was going to put on Ole Miss, how they deserved a better bowl with better competition, and how ole miss wasn't even going to hang. someone even said this to me, "do you really think that ole miss can handle texas tech's offense? we had a chance at the national championship and had to settle for the cotton bowl. it didn't even enter you guys' minds that you could make it to the national championship." i replied with a simple "we'll see, big shot." as you read this, take your hand and extend it before you, now make the "L" with it like valley girls used to do when they'd tell someone that they were a loser. it should look like you've made a shooter mcgavin pistol with your index and thumb. now do it with your other hand and point it at everyone you come in contact with for the rest of the day. congratulations, you've become a part of the most annoying fan base in america. in the first quarter, when TT quickly amassed their 14 to 0 lead, i had to sit and listen to the TT fans around us talk about how horrible ole miss is and how awesome TT is. they even had the nerve to do the stupid pistol thing at me. the guy to the right and behind me knew not to talk to me anymore when i threatened to break his fingers if he did it again. maybe i had drank too much, but if i was going to sit there for the whole game i wasn't going to deal with that crap. as ole miss controlled the game from the 2nd quarter through the 3rd quarter i didn't have to worry about much more of that though. even after the game, they handled the loss like a bunch of babies and i didn't see ANY TT fans out on the town friday night.
-Harrell deserves the all-time NCAA record. it's almost as if the NCAA powers that be knew that Harrell would not win the heisman. so what do they do? plan everything so that mccoy wins the big12 mvp, bradford wins the heisman, and harrell's name is cemented in the ncaa all-time record holder list. nicely done great planners of football. anyway, as long as colt brennan does not hold that record from beating up on wussy WAC teams, then i'm satisfied.
-the dallas metro area is freaking huge. take memphis and drop it where murfesboro is, take knoxville and put it where franklin is, and take chatanooga and move it to hendersonville and the nashville area is STILL not as big as the dallas area. some friends and i left the bars (that close at 2 AM, LAME) with some friends and rode north. all i saw was buildings and street lights for like 15 minutes. the dallas area is also a great place. i had a blast down there and wouldn't mind going back sometime soon. the women there are gorgeous, the bars and clubs are too much fun, and everything there has a flash and glimmer to it that can't be described. you just have to see it. the one thing that did get annoying was the constant texas self-hugging going on. "well in texas we (insert one-upper comment)", "you're in texas now...", etc. not to mention that the lone star was on EVERYTHING. however, things like that are what makes texas a great state. i would imagine that if i was there, i would be on the "texas rocks" wagon as well.
-everyone there knew i was from tennessee, for every time that i heard someone say how awesome texas is, i would say "IF IT WEREN'T FOR TENNESSEE THERE'D BE NO TEXAS!". contrary to what i believed would happen, it made me a lot of friends, and got me some free drinks. texas is fun.
-future cotton bowl attendees should be happy that they are moving it to texas stadium. there i was, entering the cotton bowl. there's no telling how many fights, celebrations, tears, blood, and booze were spilled here. i got to my gate, "awesome, 40 yard line tickets". walking out of the gate i heard the roar of the 88,000 plus crowd and i was overwhelmed with excitement. it was truly something to be a part of. got to my seat and... i was one row behind a giant pole. i could not see around this monstrous concrete burden. i protested our seating arrangements with those around me. "I PAID THREE HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR THIS?!"(100 a tick). luckily, the people behind and around us got together and invaded the rows in front of us and stood around and in front of the pillar of obstruction. when i went to sit down, BAM, my knees slammed into the metal seats in front of me. the space for seats in the cotton bowl makes neyland's seating arrangements look like first class lounge material. outside of the stadium is martin luther king blvd. as the great comedian chris rock once said, "you know you are in a rough part of town when the street you are on is mlk." or something to that extent. a friend and i attempted to walk to a liquor store a few blocks away before we were stopped by a police officer who told us that it would be in our best interest to stay closer to the stadium. it's a historic place, and for that i respect the venue, but it's not a good place to invite 80,000+ to pay 100 dollars to watch a bowl game.
-ole miss girls are the most beautiful beings that god has dropped on earth's soil. i still can't get over it. i fell in love every 10 minutes.
-i met 4 fans from 4 different SEC schools. they all were very jealous and concerned with the dream team that we have assembled to call plays and recruit on rocky top. it's a great feeling knowing that "tennessee football" and "jealousy" and "fear" are starting to follow each other out of opposing fans' mouths. and the mighty pendulum swings.
i hope that my quick facts have given you some sort of idea of what was going on in dallas this weekend. overall, i'd give the experience a 9/10, and i would have given it an 8/10 even if ole miss had lost. dallas is a fun place, the bowl game was awesome, and big12 fans met a real defense. AWESOME.
