Could Croom become a TE?

I have mentioned this about Hurd to TE before. He is listed as 6'4" 232 in HS. Assuming he grows another inch(as most 6'4 17 year olds do) and assuming he puts on 5 to 10% lean muscle weight, he could b 6'5" 255+ in college, with history as a WR in HS (soph). I think he would then move to TE, not because he is "too big" to play RB, but because he may be too well suited to TE not to change. A great TE has a lot more earning potential than a good RB.

Butch is recruiting Jalen at the position Jalen prefers to play...IF Jalen excels at rb..that's where Jalen will play, and we will have to search elsewhere for our NFL tight end...why do I keep repeating Jalen's name?because he's a bigger part of the decision than anyone on this board

i bet he would be a TE in UO's offense

on another note did you see how many times they had the TE try and block clowney what is up with that?

I feel that he will end up as a hybrid TE/WR. Look at Graham with the Saints. He is lined up in multiple sets. Mostly used as a WR. Although they list him as a TE. Same thing for Davis at the 9r's. Jason's build is perfect for that hybrid player. He is too fast for a LB to cover and too big for a DB to cover.

Iirc...Dooley had decided to move him to TE last year after he got hurt. So no he wouldn't be good at TE cause dooley is a moron that has no clue about what would be best for player development. So all yall that agreed with the OP need to go in TO for it.

CBJ knows what's best for the team. Good thing is he took over a team full of players that will do what it takes to win as a team. So imo if CBJ says he wants him to be a TE Croom will do it without hesitation. And MzTerry will be right there quizing him on his new assignments late night on the phone.

Dont know the future, just giving an opinion. I dont think he will play RB. Safety seems more likely to me. I could be wrong, we will see soon enough.

RB all day long. I don't for the life of me understand the thought that he can't be a RB in college. 6'4" 230, runs 4 freakin .37.... there are plenty of examples of "big running backs" who have had great success in college and the NFL. Alabama doesn't seem to want Derrick Henry, a 6'4 245 lb RB to play TE or safety or DE or OLB... still very much a running back and he doesn't sniff 4.37.

Finally, we have 2 top TEs committed for 2014, one of which (Helm) is the #1 TE recruit in the country.

Not trying to flame, just dont understand why we would move a top 5 nationally ranked, elitely talented RB and move him to another position when we desperately need a top RB next year. And from everything I've read, he fully expects to play RB at UT, the position for which he was recruited.

There is the rare exception, I agree. However, he did play in another era. The boys are a little bigger nowadays.

Wait a sec. You want smaller RBs now because the non-RBs are a little bigger nowadays? Huh?

There are very, very few 6'4 230 lb guys who run 4.37... Hurd does. He's a running back. I'd rather have him at that size running 4.37 carrying the ball than a 5'9 195 guy running 4.37.... Physics and all.

Keep trying real hard and you can probably name a few more. Shall I start naming RB's that are not even 6' much less 6'4"?

Here are a few names of guys that are HOF and or HOF caliber RBs, all over 6'0...

Adrian Peterson 6'2
Eddie George 6'3"
Steven Jackson 6'3"
Eric Dickerson 6'4
OJ Simpson 6'2
OJ Anderson 6'2
John Riggins 6'3
Franco Harris 6'3
Marcus Allen 6'2
Jim Brown 6'2

No need to play the "game has changed, all those guys are from back in the day" card.

We have some very talented TEs coming in next year, so it would be ridiculous to move Croom or anyone to that position. With North, Croom, Pig, Harris, JJohnson, Jenkins, Pearson, JSmith, Bowles, Blanc, Creamer and Carter next year, I think we'll have a SUPER talented WR corps to rely on next year until the TEs come along.

Seems like my opinion isn't a popular one. It won't bother me to be wrong on this. If he plays RB, I hope he's the best ever. I just don't see it happening. Again, jmo.

No worries. We're all on the same team. Just enjoying the debate. Go Vols.

You're right. Never seen a 245 lb Safety. 220-230 is pretty rate but there have been a handful of them. Steve Atwater comes to mind. Most seem to be in the 205-215 lb range.

The heaviest Ronnie Lott ever was in the NFL was 203.

Hurd will play RB, but that doesn't mean the coaches won't take advantage of his versatility and line him up or shift him outside at times.

He'll be a true match up nightmare.

FWiW, Hurds mom posted on VQ that the doctor said his spine platelets are grown together or something like there's little space now which says he's done growing taller and will only widen from here on out.

Thanks for that refresh...it never seems to settle in the minds of those plotting Jalen's career path
