Well, people are just pointing out that Western Kentucky may not be a cake walk. We know how Tennessee has played the past few years, and most people are a little shady to just assume we will have a blow out win.
If UT continues to play that way then is Jones the right coach? I mean if the expectation is that you will continue to play the same way... why waste the time and energy to change?
Most coaches, even Saban, don't make that huge of a difference the very first season.
Not true. It is more situational. Saban's first year at Bama compares better to Kiffin's year at UT. There was some talent but huge holes too. Discipline was a huge issue.
Saban's first year at LSU makes a better example though. Talented team with very poor coaching... went from 3-8 to 7-4 then won a bowl. Coaching made an immediate impact.
Hoke made an immediate impact at Michigan. Kelly made an immediate impact at ND. A 6-6 team became a 7-5 team and won a bowl... that's all I'm asking.
Sumlin made an immediate impact.
Freeze took an Ole Miss team that went 4-8 then 2-10 and improved to 7-6 including a bowl win.
Meyer took over a UF team that had lost 5 games in 3 consecutive seasons and won immediately.
Spurrier took over USCe and won one more than the year prior and two more than the previous two years. Marginal improvement? Yes. The right coach is worth another win over what the team would have won.
The only two examples I can think of where SEC coaches have had success without making an immediate impact large or small are Miles and Richt. IMHO, neither is an elite coach. They just have great home state recruiting that covers it up.
