#38 - 24-6 vs #6 UCLA (1989)

After a terrible’88 season, and a lackluster win vs Colorado St, nobody had any idea what was going to happen with the rest of the ‘89 season. Now, UT had to travel to UCLA as a 17 point underdog.

Sterling Henton got the Vols on the board early with a short TD run, and then Reggie Cobb and Chuck Webb took over. Cobb-Webb was born.

The Vols only needed 108 passing yards from Henton, as Webb ran for 134 and Cobb had 78. Webbs two touchdowns were the difference in the dominant win.

The Vols defense held the Bruins scoreless until the fourth quarter and kept their vaunted rushing game in check all night.

It was the first win ever at the Rose Bowl stadium, the first win ever on the west coast, and the springboard to a successful 1989 season…….

And there he is! Chuck Webb!

That really was a huge win for us as 17 point underdogs. A national game.

My brother went to that game at the Rose Bowl stadium. We just talked about it again the other day.

There for awhile we had the greatest RB duo in all of college football. Could be argued in the history of college football.

I've stated this before.........I really believe that Chuck Webb would have gone down as the greatest back in UT history if he hadn't gotten injured .....and would have stayed another year.

best combo of speed and strength ever in a Vol uniform.

And this year I believe Small/Wright are going to cause some flashbacks to Cobb/Webb, especially since people won't be able to +1 in the box on us without getting zapped over the top. There's probably a guy making a mint door-dashing pepto bismol on the steady to the UVA DC's house right now.

#37 - 10-6 vs #6 Miami (2003)

2 touchdown underdogs. A 26 game home winning streak. The aura of the Orange Bowl. The U. UT didn’t have a chance vs the vaunted Hurricanes.

Brick Berlin threw two interceptions and fumbled once as No. 18 Tennessee stunned sixth-ranked Miami 10-6, knocking the Hurricanes out of the national championship picture for the first time in four years and ending the nation's longest home-winning streak at 26 games.

The Volunteers (7-2) became the first visiting team to celebrate a victory at the Orange Bowl since Penn State did it Sept. 18, 1999. Tennessee won with just 170 yards of offense, 81 passing and 89 rushing.

The biggest play came when Fulmer gambled on fourth-and-goal from the 2 in the second quarter. Derrick Tinsley scored on an end around to give Tennessee a 10-3 lead.

The Hurricanes (7-2) failed to score a touchdown at home for the first time since 1984. It also was the first time since a 47-0 drubbing at Florida State in 1997 that Miami failed to scored a touchdown in any game.

Casey Clausen, who was 11-of-18 passing for 81 yards and improved to 13-1 as a starter on the road.

We also found out that Kellen Winslow was a “soldier.”;)

The victory helped Tennessee's chances of getting a berth in the Bowl Championship Series. Things didn’t work out, and the Vols settled for a Peach Bowl berth and would finish the season 10-3, ranked #16.

Imagine if the (then) rule had allowed Condredge to play his freshman year! That team was stacked but lacked a QB iirc.

Or if Bobby Scott had taken a redshirt previously. I recall him having said that he regretted not having done so, since the '71 team had an exceptional defense but struggled mightily at the quarterback position. To fully grasp just how bad our quarterbacks were that year, the three of them completed 71 out of 172 passes (39.7%) for 951 yards, 3 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. 1971 Tennessee Volunteers Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

A huge win. It's hard for people who don't know how big a program Miami was back then to appreciate what a great upset we pulled off there. GBO! 🍊

I remember living in Chattanooga and working for Vol network affiliate this year. It was my first year as a fan. I also remember this game was not on television and listened to it on the radio with John and Bill

yeah it was kind of late game.... around 9 pm CT kick IIRC. Glorious night!

I think WLAC had just joined the Vol Network that season. There were a couple of call in clowns that loved to bash CJM on Bob Bell's show.... the week before the game the two clowns promised they would crawl to Knoxville on the knees if the VOLS beat ucla.

#36 - 38-33 vs #20 Florida (2022)

3-0 Tennessee hosted 2-1 Florida, with Tennessee trying to make a statement, and end a six game skid vs the hated Gators.

Despite a vaunted effort by Anthony Richardson, the day just belonged to Tennessee.

Tennessee fumbled away an early scoring opportunity, but took a 10-7 lead after Hooker scored on a short run.

After a UF score, Hooker lead UT on a 99 yard drive that ended with a short TD pass that put the Vols up 17-14 at the half.

Tennessee quickly scored out of the halftime break, with Hooker finding Jabari Small to take a ten point lead. Once again though, Florida found an answer. Tennessee couldn’t find any stops on fourth down, and the Gators took advantage to keep breathing. Every time the Gators had an answer, the Volunteers one-upped them.

Jabari Small gave Tennessee a ten point lead at 31-21 near the end of the third quarter.

Just as Anthony Richardson was coming up with yet another answer, he fumbled in the redzone. The Volunteers jumped on it, and that ended up being the turning point of the game.

Tennessee finally had some breathing room. The offense walked right down the field and scored again, making the comeback trail incredibly difficult for the Gators. A 38-21 lead was trimmed to 38-27, but Florida failed to convert the two point conversion.

The Gators came back to slice it down to a 38-33 lead, but once again failed to convert the two point conversion. After UF got the onside kick, I honestly sensed the worst, but UT got just enough pressure on Richardson, that his desperation pass fell short of the endzone.

Hendon Hooker finished 22-28 for 349 yards and two touchdowns. He added 111 yards on the ground, scoring another one on the ground.

It was a big moment for Josh Heupel’s program, quickly getting over the Florida hump and improving to 4-0. The Pitt win was great, but beating Florida, even an average Florida, was huge for the program.
