Country music thread

Obviously no TVZ, Zach Bryan, Childers etc. but I’ve really enjoyed this. It sounds country, has steel, and fiddle. No deep lyrics, but listening to it while walking the dog was fun.

So. The house band was, well a house band. But what they played was pretty good. The venue isn’t a concert hall, it’s a huge urban cowboy bar, complete with mechanical bull. Lots of sections where you wouldn’t even see the stage.

I actually found a tv with the Duke-Miami game and watched that while drowning out the radio Country and waiting for the real show. Where I met a “Nasty Girl” (TP will get it at least) who was in town because he was getting recertified at Bragg. Dude knows his hill/red dirt country.

The real opening act was really good. I’m going to check them out on Spotify. Mikele Buck Band. Had quite a few songs I liked the sound of. Complete with a female fiddle player. My affinity for the fiddle is well known. So when the lead singer strapped on a harmonica, I got curious. The he goes “2020 sucked, but this past year got a whole lot better.” you could see the room perk up. Then he says “I mean Turnpike got back together” and he started into good lord Lorrie. Place went nuts. At least sort of. More on that later.

RRB still brings it. Every song. Randy isn’t a showman of any sorts, but he keeps you in the palm of his hands with how he crafts the set list and just a few one liners here and there. Brady is an incredibly gifted fiddle player. And the showman of the group. RRB is the reason I got into this music so I’ll always have bias with them, but the lyrics and sound are phenomenal. Still my favorite.

The total crowd was huge, and the bar is gigantic. I’d argue that 75% of the crowd was there to see the show, specifically a red dirt show. About 5% were there to dance. Country dancing mind you, but I think they show up whether it’s the house band all night, one of the FL/GA line doofuses (who will be there next month) or a Red Dirt elder. The other 20% were choosing to go to a country bar in clubbing attire. They even hung out on the dance/stage floor, and it was just weird.

but RRB still puts on a heck of a show, and I’d go back tonight if they were playing again. And fwiw, they are playing Blind Horse tonight.
Thanks for the recommendation (Mikele Buck Band) I’ve been listening all day. Really good stuff.

Its hard because most folks don't "get" personal tunes. Dark and Dirty Mile by Boland describes our relationship perfectly, maybe I'll just invite cool people who get it

Yeah, we had a lot of “non-traditional” wedding songs because we picked stuff that describes our relationship. Luckily, we got married during COVID so we had an excuse to not invite unwanted family and “friends.”

“There’s a hole in daddy’s arm where all the money goes and Jesus Christ died for nothin I suppose. Little pitchers have big ears, don’t stop to count the years. Sweet songs never last too long on broken radios…”

There will never be a storyteller like Prine again.

Never been a dad but sang "Madeline" to her granddaughter tonight while we babysat.

"Hearing your own voice is the hardest part of singing, but dont let that stop you fron trying to sing"

I’ve been signing songs off Alan Jackson’s Bluegrass Album during my kids bath time and it’s honestly been one of the best things I’ve done

That's awesome. As a guy who's never been a family man per se, singing a simple tune to a 2 years old is kinda neat. The reactions and the peace. And "never be ashamed, of the fact that you are Southern".

I think my love for American Aquarium is rooted in how I was an off the map wild drunk for 10 years after my ETS date, and I've worked to make something good from that time and BJ is sort of the same.

I kinda dig Bill's explanation of "A better south", we need more volnationals at the next RTTR.

I love when country music sprawls into the main forum since we are kinds snobby.

"She loves her Jason Boland, she gets out on the floor, and YOU KNOW she's front and center, for the Turnpike Troubadours, she'll follow them all around the world, she's a Red Dirt Girl.

Our first date was Reckless, then the weekend before Covid was Boland and next night The Departed.

Boland started "Fences" then stopped dead and said "this is 3/4 time, you waltz not 2 step"

As for that Morgan Wallen thread in the main forum, sure you can listen to whatever you want to. But, on the flip side, I can call it garbage. You can even call Turnpike, Isbell, RRB, or Pat garbage. I mean you’re wrong, but you can say it.
