Country music thread

I'm not a huge country fan by any means. But I heard a country swing band the other day that was very good. The band is the time jumpers and is worth checking out if you like that style. Vince Gill plays with them a lot so if you like his music you probably like these guys.

Huge fan of Vince Gill and the Time Jumpers, good call.

Thought I would post this here.

PBS today announced that Ken Burns is working on a a documentary series about country music — though it won’t air until 2018, Kerger said this morning. Country Music will follow its evolution over the course of the 20th century as it “eventually emerged to become America’s music,” PBS claimed in its announcement.

Anybody in Knoxville going to see Jason Isbell tomorrow at Bijou? Wish I could make it over for that one. I'll be in town seeing Robert Earl Keen on Friday - if you're looking for a more classic country singer/songwriter type that has branched out into other genres over the years.

Wish I could've been in Knoxville to see Jason Isbell...

These critics really like Kacey Musgraves:

http://http://www.nashvillescene.com/nashville/in-2013-the-new-artists-were-also-the-best-artists-with-kacey-musgraves-brandy-clark-and-ashley-monroe-leading-the-charge/Content?oid=4034331

Musgraves had the #1, #3 and #4 songs and co-wrote Miranda's "Momma's Broken Heart" which finished #2. I found the following two paragraphs particularly amusing and accurate:

When it comes to business, 2013's big story was "bro-country," the wildly successful radio format of guys singing about driving their trucks down a dirt road with a girl in tight blue jeans in the shotgun seat, a case of beer on the floor and one Hank or another on the radio. The critics were not impressed. Well, some critics were impressed by these records' production values — the way the rhythm tracks burst like precision artillery and the way the guitar tone was seemingly squeezed out of a hand-lotion tube — but most critics recognized that nothing gets old more quickly than any one year's technological breakthrough.

Florida Georgia Line, the year's Top Country Artist according to the music-business bible Billboard, could do no better with the critics than the No. 24 single and the No. 143 album. Luke Bryan, the runner-up on Billboard's list, was voted the No. 44 single and the No. 30 album by our critics, who also voted Blake Shelton (fourth on Billboard's list) the No. 19 single and the No. 23 album. Jason Aldean (sixth on Billboard) was voted the No. 28 single and the No. 68 album.

Really like Jon Pardi's debut album. 8 out of the 11 songs are awesome. On a scale from 1-10 I give it an eight.

You guys would be proud of me. I know nothing about country music really, as it is not at all popular here, so I don't know any artists. However, I have decided to give it a whirl, and will be attending the Country 2 Country festival at the O2 Arena in London. On the day I go Rascall Flatts, Chris Young, Brad Paisley and The Band Perry will be playing.

So far I have listened to all of them a little bit, to familiarise myself with the music and I must say I absolutely love the genre so far, Brad Paisley in particular I find extremely good to listen to.

I will be attending with a fellow Vol from VN who is studying over here until June. 'Merica.

That's awesome. Youll enjoy that concert. Buy Garth Brooks "In Peices" album. You won't be sorry. But you can't download it, you have to buy the cd.

Being TN is a southern state, country music is popular of course, but I honestly can't stand most of it. I said MOST lol. If you're going to try country out, then you have to give the real guys a listen. I consider the older country real. Today's stuff has too many elements to it that take away from how it started, IMO.

George strait, Johnny cash, Alan Jackson, Conway twitty, hank Williams/jr, Waylon Jennings, George jones, even Garth brooks.

I consider that country. Whether people like the music or not its country. Now days it's pop country and there are very few of those songs that I like.

That's fair enough. I do like what I have heard of the modern stuff. I will try some of the older stuff though. I'm open to anything. Of course I do know a lot of Johnny Cash but I have never considered myself a fan as such. My favourite artist is Tom Petty and some of the more country stuff he has done I love. Not sure if you guys would consider it country though.

Paisley is a very good guitar player and one of my favorites.

If you want some good older style country music try listening to a band called The Time Jumpers. They are a local (to Nashville) band and very very good. I typically don't like most country music, modern or otherwise, but they are one of the exceptions.

I am "music" fan of which country is one of my favorite genres. Being older I go back to the old Porter Waggoner/Dolly Parton, Ernest Tubbs, Possum, etc. days; as well on through the 70s, 80s, etc. Been to many, many concerts/performances and have personally met many artists including going backstage a few times.

All of that is to say that IMO the best entertainer in country music today and over the past 10 years is Keith Urban. His version, which really is a hybrid country rock, as well as his guitar playing is on a different level. Some will say Paisley is better or somebody else and that is fine. But they are actually different styles. Urban's influences are clearly more rock. His concert with Little Big Town and Dustin Lynch last night was spectacular. FWIW Dustin is going to be a star and is more traditional country. Packed house at TBA. Urban had even improved his licks since he was in Knoxville the last time. His show and personal connection with the fans was excellent. But I go to simply listen to him play the guitar, while my wife goes to simply look at the eye candy. lol.

Hands down my favorite vocalist today is Darius Rucker. Over time, George Strait and Alan Jackson.

My advice to you is if you want to get into country music, start from the beginning! Most of what's being marketed today really isn't country music! It's just pop music with the occasional fiddle or steel guitar thrown in. If you want to experience real country music I would suggest starting with the classics...

Hank Williams
Patsy Cline
George Jones
Loretta Lynn
Gene Autry
Johnny Cash
Merle Haggard
Charlie Daniels
Dolly Parton
Tammy Wynette
Charlie Pride
Mickey Gilley
Eddie Rabbit
Buck Owens
Ernest Tubb
Ronnie Milsap
Charlie Rich

Then from there you should check out artists like....

The Judds
Ricky Scaggs
Garth Brooks
George Straight
Hank Williams Jr
Reba Macentyre
Vince Gill
Alan Jackson
Dwight Yokam
Randy Travis
Travis Tritt

and there are many many more that I'm not thinking of but off the top of my head these are the ones that I would consider "required reading" for those who are getting into country music!

What's some good country/western?

If you're wanting some good "western" type of country, Gene Autry is probably considered the Godfather of this style. I'm also a huge fan of Marty Robbins and Slim Whitman. Definitely check those out. Johnny Cash also did quite a few songs with a western flair. His song "Ghost Riders In The Sky" is one of my all time favorites.

The southern culture is different than it was in the past. Today's country speaks of how times are now. Classic country preaches how times where then. I love both.

I would rather listen to Terry Bradshaw's album than any of the Nashville pop of the last 15 years. The good music comes from the plains.

If you like music with meaning and straight from the heart songs, please give Hank Williams Sr and George Jones a listen.
