Couple things on 2014 bball class

Looking at past years classes/rankings, if we get one more top 150 recruit we are a lock for a top 20 class it would appear.

I have and it looks like we need more top 100 4 stars....these two are 3 stars that are rated slightly better than AJ and Darius combined and that class included Hubbs.

I wanted Cofer.

Get Stephen Hurt. He's going to replace Jarnell.

Also, I'm going to surprise people. I think we get Jalen Lindsey. If I'm CCM, I'm making the full court press on him right now because his stock is dropping a little. He reminds me of McRae.

I'd love a Mitchell/Lindsey/Demery/Cornish/Cofer/Hurt class, then drop one from the roster currently after next season. Maybe Reese.

I'm with you there...his names popping around more, and I keep saying it...I doubt he gets those offers (UNC & UK) that he wants. Rob Lewis just posted about Mitchell that we are recruiting him, but doubts we pursue any wing hard until we know exactky where we stand with Lindsey.

Weird, I thought Lindsey didn't have as much interest in us. This whole time, I was under the impression that the likelihood of landing the 3 Ls would be Lyle, Looney, Lindsey in that order

I guess it all depends on the service you wanna look at. I do think we will land a top 100 player so if that happens this discussion becomes moot anyways.

Not denying that. What I haven't been impressed with though is that for some reason these Memphis kids so highly recruited by everyone don't seem to make it to the NBA. I kinda think Memphis is a bit overrated with HS talent. Now I'm not denying that it is a hotbed of prep talent but it might be overrated. Atlanta on the other hand seems to be a bit underrated. Just not seeing that many Memphis kids gracing the NBA although Stokes will be a first round pick next year. Just sayin'

so where was the idiocy in my post?

We've always been in his top 6, the issue was he was always high on duke, UNC and UK. The problem for him is that it's unlikely any of those 3 schools are gonna come offer anytime soon. So...that leaves us, providence and Louisville really...and I'm not sure he's been made much of a priority by UL.

Dont remember betting but I dont think we will be top 20

No we may make it but I feel you have to get more guys in the top 100 than the 100-150 but Im very happy Cofer is coming to Tennessee.......We might make it but I honestly think it will end up being borderline top twenty but I hope I am wrong.

How about now?

Just a few things, figured this was a good spot...

*we have our PG of the future, how good does that sound saying it? This isn't a combo guard, larry Austin is a "true pg" to the fullest. I fully expect him to compete for the starting job next year, and wouldn't be surprised to see him win it.

*big time props to coach Martin and staff. We offered Austin about 2 weeks ago iirc. Bruce Weber had been recruiting him for 3 years, and Josh Pastner had extended a Memphis offer months ago. Martin came in, and over a 2 weeks span gave him on hell of a sales pitch apparently. What a job by Martin and the staff!

*again, Mr. Cornish deserves some credit, I have little doubt in my mind that he helped land austin. Cornish is definitely the Vic Wharton of the basketball team an deserves alot of credit for the 2014 class.

*i said WAY back this would be a top 20 class, after the Cofer commit I felt even better. Now after the Austin commit, it's pretty much guaranteed top 20 class, and likely gonna end up top 15. With as much as we will lose off this year's team, a solid class was more than important, Martin is delivering his best recruiting class to date, by far.

GO VOLS!!!

Forgot maybe the biggest point about today's commitment...

*with the addition of Austin, that gives us 3 commits already in the 2014 class. PG, SG/SF, and a forward. This will allow Martin and the staff to really narrow their focus down now, and target a few specific guys. My best guess as to who those guys will be: Looney, London, Kasongo, Turman and Hurt. It will be interesting to watch what happens with Micthell going forward, I don't think the staff will make him a priority now that they've got Austin, but well see.

Vols up to no. 7 on ESPN class rankings.

Who they have: Coach Cuonzo Martin already has secured a commitment from three players in the 2014 class: ESPN 100 point guard Larry Austin, four-star power forward Phil Cofer and four-star shooting guard Jordan Cornish. Austin is a true blue-collar point guard who plays with great energy and urgency on both ends of the floor. He'll be a great fit at Tennessee. Cofer is a slightly undersized but workmanlike prospect. Cornish, a New Orleans product, tipped for the Vols in May to get the class rolling.

Who they want: ESPN 100 forward Kevon Looney, the No. 9 recruit in the 2014 class, has the Vols in his recently released final six, so they are squarely in the mix. Tennessee is also after four-star prospects shooting guard Ahmed Hill, power forward Leron Black, point guard JaQuel Richmond, center Trayvon Reed, power forward Jaylen Johnson and small forward James Demery.

I follow football recruiting much closer than I do basketball, but I'm starting to get more into basketball recruiting and I'm really excited about the this class. And I can't wait to see who else we end up adding.

I've got a question for you guys who follow basketball recruiting closer than I do though. What are the stengths and weaknesses of the SG/SF commit (Cornish)? Is he scorer or more of a facilitator? Is he a slasher or a spot up type of guy, and how good is he from 3 point land? And lastly, how is he on the other end of the court (defense)?

I've read a lot about Austin so I think have a good idea of the type of player he is going to be for us, and I'm so happy to finally have that true PG to run Martin's offense the way it is supposed to be run. I'm just trying to get a better idea of what we've got in our other current commitments.

He sucks. Look at his offer list.

He's a slasher likes to get to the basket. His body size now is college ready. He likes to take advantage of smaller players. His weakness from what I see is being consistent on his shot. He isn't bad but he's streaky. He needs a little correction on his shot. He's a good defender. I think in a couple interviews he takes pride in it. You'll be pleased with what he will bring to the table in the coming years. Austin Hubbs Cornish Cofer Thompson ect will be very good players in the future IMO.

He's similar to Armani Moore, but Moore is a much better overall athlete. He has a legit college body so you want see many SF/SG out muscle him or physically impose their will on him. He's better suited for SF than SG due his body size and average shooting ability imo. I'm just curious as to why he doesn't have an local offers (i.e. LSU, Tulane, etc.).

Thanks for the info guys :hi:. I was thinking he was going to be more of a shooting guard but I'm glad to see that you guys think he's better suited to play small forward, because I think that is a bigger need for us going forward especially after landing Hubbs in the last class. I'm not worried that he's a streaker shooter at this point because many HS players could be labeled as such. McRae was a very streaker shooter coming out of HS and through his freshman and sophomore years. And Martin did a great job of developing him into a much more consistent player, so hopefully he can do the same with Cornish.

I've got one last question for you basketball guys. How good of an athlete is he (Cornish)? Is he comparable to McRae (who's a very good athlete IMO) or is he not on that level? If not is there someone on the team or in the SEC (now or previously) that he compares to as an athlete?

Good pick up by Zo.....still feel that we need one more in the top 100 to be solidly in the top 20 but I think he will get it done this yr.

One of hurt/London would solidify their spot in the top 20, both would push it into top 15 territory.
