Yes I would assume.

I'm speaking as to a regular run of the mill stop by the police.

Had an employee get busted with a dime bag. The cops took it and his pipe. Wtote him a citation to appear in court.

ahh I gotcha

I'm just repeating what chief said. They very likely would not have taken him into custody for less than 2 grams of pot.

I'm not saying your information is bad, i'm calling BS on the chief. I wouldn't be surprised if they let 2 grams go frequently but i highly doubt it's policy (especially repeat offenders).

How could that be true?

2 grams of marijuana is a misdemeanor. For that amount, the officer has discretion as to making a physical arrest or giving the person a citation in lieu of arrest. Many times, people are given citations.

I saw something that said he's already been in jail before, so I'd be shocked if taking part in a drug deal would, in any way, not result in extended jail time for a second time

You would be shocked then. If he truly had only 2 grams, he most likely wouldn't have done any time unless he had a long list of misdemeanor drug convictions. 2 grams of marijuana is nothing in the system.

Edit: the gun is different. But it all depends on if he is a convicted felon. If his convictions are only misdemeanors, then the gun charge is only a misdeameanor. You can actually lawfully carry a gun in TN now in your vehicle without a permit. I just read an updated article that said he was on probation for robbery, therefore, he was a convicted felon.

For some reason I think he will say the cop was going to shoot him and he feared for his life and it was self defense because he is black and blah blah blah

I know right? Things like that never happen.

They let the driver go....
No charges filed against him. Apparently they are not concerned with the 1.7 grams of pot.

Bingo and the driver fled also after his padre blasted the officer.. Tell us who he is and we let you go... Deal!

It jus happened 2-3 weeks ago Darius Stewart 19 year old had a warrant for molesting a child.. Got to fighting with the cop.. Cop shot and killed him... He was also a passenger... But there was outrage on the police.. Same circumstances as last night guess what happened same thing.. Officer dead! The cop that killed the child molester was a villain in the media and they had his name and where he lived.. They had to remove that cop and his family from Memphis because of death threats... Now a cop is dead from the same exact scenario as last night.. Now tell me what's right?

Not trying to argue, but it's basically come out that teen is a different person than the child molester with the same name. Apparently he'd been held before because there was someone out in the area with the same name who had a long list of crimes attached to him.

Punk, thug, loser. Give him a bullet and save the taxpayer money on any prison time.

Where are the safety procedures in this incident though? You light up a vehicle, see occupants, and decide to approach the car. This has become a suspect vehicle. I'm not an LEO but I damn sure wouldn't allow ANY occupant of ANY suspect vehicle to approach me let alone allow them to get close enough for physical contact. Your pepper spray, taser, or firearm should have been drawn before the guy even got close enough to engage.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if he refused to resort to a gun because of all the problems going around right now. He probably was doing everything in his power to resolve it peacefully and he was tragically unaware that the perpetrator had a firearm.

I guess I'm one of those that actually likes the idea of a life of cruel and unusual punishment, eventhough it's illegal, for cases like these, rather than an instant death penalty.

It was a very sad day today. I have a person at my work that personally knew the officer.

He would rather take a life than probably go back to the pen for probation violation. Also he is a liar. Also he is really a coward now because he has to defend himself. Amazing. Weak little man.

Waiting on March by Al and Jesse..................

Oh we all know this will never happen. Al and Jesse never get involved unless it's white on black crime. Just once I'd like to see them go to Baltimore and talk to the citizens about stopping the murders.

How about they head to Memphis to defend these people.

People like Rev Al and Rev Jesse are part of what is wrong with America today. They're race baiters and refuse to back down.

Public hangings upon death penalty decision and let them hang until they rot through the noose. This would stop some of this crime.

That wouldn't be bad either. I just think of the psychological effects of a life not worth living, rather than just killing them immediately, which is probably what most criminals like these would want anyway.

For those that commit crimes like these, I want the criminal to suffer psychologically and even physically.

While that would end some crime (not much imo), it would definitely bring us, the US, down to the level of those we call savages. One of the biggest differences in the us-vs-them mentality is our treatment of criminals. The worst of the worse, those who receive the penalty of death, are still given the most humane death. The second we start treating the worst of the worst the same way as those we call savages is the second we become just like them.

Don't agree. Public hangings would do a lot for criminal control in this control. I was being a little harsh (band over the top) with the rotting portion I do apologize.

What percentage of crime reduction would you expect if it were inevitably going to eliminate the perception that Americans are not savages?
