Critique of Nico’s throwing motion

I can tell that some of you have never seen a young man or kid injure his arm because of really bad mechanics. They can get away with it for a while, but when the volume of throws start to accumulate, damage can occur.
The kid is a phenom on the volleyball court, his flexibility , arm strength and physical stature, this guy is special . I don’t think his mechanics will injure his shoulder. I think he will be a phenom in the SEC, he can spin it

You guys didn't actually watch and listen to the video. He is complimentary of Nico the whole video. Has a ton of good things to say about him, talks about how he has improved his motion, and shows game film to prove that Nico is every bit as talented as people say he is.
The video made complete sense to me. QBs get their motions tweaked all the time.

No offense, and I don't know who that entity is, but does it really matter? There have been a lot of great QB's with less than ideal throwing motions. As long as it gets there on time and in the right spot, I'm not sure why it matters. Hell, there are some fantastic golfers who have absolutely crazy golf swings, but it works for them and they're on tour doing quite well. You start monkeying with something like a throwing motion and you'd better be really sure of what you're going to get. Personally, if Nico gets the ball out quickly and on target, I say leave it the hell alone. Until it's "broke", don't fix it.

I have watched a good bit of game tape on Nico, and he is like Mahomes and Allen in that he can deliver the ball accurately with LOTS of power at seemingly any release angle, while scrambling around outside the pocket. He has a cannon when compared to any starting SEC passer not named Milton..and Joe has the strongest arm i have ever seen on a human being at any level...any who reserve doubt about that should watch him throw a rope 110 to 120 yards with a large orange and smash it 6ft high against the brick wall in Neyland...he threw it from the opposite goal line. We have seen him throw the ball over 60 yards by flicking his wrist. Got sidetracked guys but anyway, Nico has all the tools at his disposal that a good NFL QB has in 2023. If he is as smart as he seems as well, we will have a great starter like Hooker for at least a couple great years IMO. Kid is a baller, no doubt. He will not falter at UT due to talent or mechanics. The pressure, if anything, would be his demise. Lord forbid.

Whether Nico goes on to have success or not will have very little to do with his stance and arm motion. This is what the analyst always do regarding quarterback prospects. They break down the mechanics, etc. This might work with baseball pitchers but imo not qbs. Arm strength and mechanics matters some. But not unless they are good at all the other things.

What makes or breaks a quarterbacks ultimate success is their mind. Their pocket presence, moxie, and ability to feel pressure and slide around in the pocket to buy time while keeping their eyes down the field. Also, seeing the lanes and just having a great understanding of physics, momentum, and angles. That’s what makes a quarterback great. There are tons of examples of guys like JG, that had good mechanics and size, but we’re just terrible at playing quarterback. Time will tell if Nico has it or not. But his release and stance won’t determine how far he goes.

Brilliant post. Agree with every word, as i bet many here will. It will not be football that could cause the kid to underachieve....the kids a ringer. Just has to not get caught up in the pressure like Hooker and so far Milton. I honestly hope Milton starts all year next year, doing great...after the season Nico and Tayven Jackson will fight for 2024s starting job and Championship Run.

GBO GBO GBO GBO GBO GBO

Yall realize we beat Flarduh, Bama, LSU, AND Clemson this season?!?!

EACH of those teams has won 2 National Championships or MORE since we last won ours in 98....we beat them all this year!!!

If you folks aren't simply filled with excitement about UT Football right now, then you need to check your pulse. I was 21 in 1998 when we won it ALL! I am 45 now. My kids have never seen a dominant UT team like we were in the 90s...only this season to remember. Coach Hype has already got us playing Championship level football, even with big holes in our defensive backfield...beginning now to improve with this influx of talent..wow. What a great time to be a Vol !! Wish my Pappaw and my Dad were still here to see it with me.

Just think Nico already really really good and yes there are little things to fix but that is why people who know knows he has the most upside as well. Sky is the limit. In CHRIST Alone

Patrick Mahomes throws right hand, left hand, under hand, side arms and with no arms my point being what works for some may not work for others. Oh, I didn't mention his behind back pass.

THIS!! If there were only one way to throw a football all the QBs at the pro level would appear to do it exactly the same and they don't. There's tweaks they all can always use to improve performance.

How many college QBs have injured their arms with bad mechanics?

Never realized how big of a stride Nico has. Interesting video. I also think Heupel will fix Nico throwing with such a lowered body. Even with a few mechanical things to work on, Nico has ridiculous arm talent and makes great decisions.

Arm motion and its connection to hip rotation IS a big deal.
His comparison to baseball is a good one.
My 2 cents ... his base WILL shorten, his stride WILL shorten, and he will wind up less.
@Fingers can you isolate a video from bowl practice and grab one during the end of spring practice for comparison sake ... if you are of a mind to do so. :^))))
If not, no biggie.

Well, if he has a flaw in his throwing motion, I am sure some time working with the coaches who had a fifth-place Heisman QB and an Orange Bowl MVP quarterback in the same season, who weren't even the same guy, can help him with it.

Ever watch MLB. Some of those dudes have horrible batting motions. In the end it's still a dinger.

I have just one request. Don't fork up his natural ability to throw the ball. Tebow was more or less just fine at Florida. In the pros, they corrected his throwing motion, and he tanked as a result. I remember in college, where in softball, I had this weird motion where I didn't windmill my arm when throwing. I sort of held it in both hands, rotated my body left, then right, left-hand now off the ball, when the right hand reached my right hip, I threw with a wrist flip. The result was the ball rotated horizontal. I consistently struck out batters, or they fouled with the ball often dropping straight down to the ground, until they struck out. The coach corrected me, to throw traditionally. Result? The ball ended all over the place. High in the air. Down at first base, beyond the fence, even on the ground. And that was that. I was pretty at outfield, so I still played. Hopefully, Vols coaches don't mess up Nicos natural ability. His throwing motion is a lot like Sonny Jurgensen, who threw sort of side arm IIRC. It also made it easier for defense players to strip the ball from him. So the video has some valid points, just don't fork him up.

Mechanics are very important to a quarterback. That is why QBs work on their mechanics all the time. Sure, some guys with natural talent get away with poor or atypical mechanics (throwing motion, footwork, etc.)--but they are the exception rather than the rule. Nico's mechanics will be worked on, I'm sure.

Ahhh yes. I remember some critics saying the same thing about Mahomes pre draft. I’m not saying Nico is going to be Mahomes, but everyone’s got an opinion these days.

The great Peyton Manning sure focused on details like this. The guy in the video wasnt dogging Nico, just talking about things even he can do to be more consistent and keep himself healthier while playing the position. This is what QB coaches do every day at every level.

If his mechanics will result in injury then make the adjustments.

Other than that, timing is everything. Deliver the ball on time to the right spot any way he wants.

Our offense allows a lot of consistent throws. When the defense gets pressure that changes how a play can be executed. Stepping up in the pocket, having to escape the pressure by moving left or right, all impact timing of the and the throwing motion. Maybe not just stepping up in the pocket, but definitely after being flushed out of the pocket everything changes.

Name that kid. Baseball yes, football I just do recall any because of throwing mechanics.

I think some of you may not be aware that, the open windows at the highest levels of football are considerably smaller than they are in high school. To be able to fit a catchable ball in a small window requires excellent mechanical skills. Most of it goes unnoticed by the average football fan. They notice when the guy misses, but they don't know why. As far as Tebow goes, do you guys think that he would flourish in a Heupel offense? Anyone with a spec of knowledge knew that he would not be a good NFL quarterback unless he was playing in an extremely run heavy offense. The guy simply couldn't throw but he was a number one pick! In fact, the 2010 draft may have been the weakest draft for quarterbacks in the history of the league! I can't believe how few there were! 2010 NFL Draft Listing | Pro-Football-Reference.com
