The trade for Juan Pierre has filled a couple of holes on our team and at the same time has created an opportunity to perhaps move our offseason in a different direction than it would have gone in had we acquired Furcal. Let's take a look at what this trade did, what it allows us to do, and perhaps some places we go from here....
LEADOFF: The first thing that comes to most people's mind in the acquisition of Juan Pierre is that we've filled our leadoff position for a full season for the first time in many years. Yes, he did have an offseason last year (.276 avg, .326 obp), but Juan has proven over his career that he is one of the few legitimate leadoff men in baseball, sporting over a .300 lifetime BA, along with an OBP of .355. While Juan could be a little better at stealing bases, he still puts the same kind of fear into a pitcher that Podsednik does on the south side.
OUTFIELD: Another spot that Pierre fills is one of our OF vacancies. Yes, he does have a weak arm and doesn't always get the greatest jumps on balls, but his speed should make up for slow jumps. He'll probably wind up playing CF for us and how many CFs have great arms to begin with? Not a lot. He's basically going to give us an above average fielder with a below average arm. With what he'll bring us offensively, he's well worth it.
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY: No, this isn't what Rafael Furcal is dreaming about (he already got his), this is one advantage to this trade over dealing for Furcal. While Furcal would have been a GREAT addition to this team, there is NO WAY he was worth $13M a year. Pierre is arbitration eligible and will end up costing us between $5M-$6M a year, while filling in the same leadoff spot that Furcal would have and filling one of our starting roles as well. This will give Hendry an extra $7M-$8M to go shopping with or bring over additional talent via trades.
If we brought in Furcal, the idea was basically to add another two OFs and go into ST. With Pierre coming in and saving us all that money, we can still bring in another OF, possibly use Walker at 2B, but most importantly, this opens up an opportunity for Jim to bring in that starting pitcher that he has been reportedly wanting. Wew'll have to see how things pan out, but that extra $7M-$8M opens up a lot of opportunities.
WHO'S NEXT?: Rumor has it that Hendry is talking to Tampa Bay about a deal that would bring over Aubrey Huff and Julio Lugo. Lugo would be another nice bat to have at the top of the order with a solid OBP and tons of speed, while Huff (not the best defensive player in the world, but can play numerous positions) would provide some left handed power who could fit nicely in between our two power hitting righties (Lee + Ramirez).
Milton Bradley? I'll be the first to admit, I'm skeptical about him because he's a tool, but he does have talent. He could easily give us another talented player, but we'll wait and see what Hendry does heree.
Washburn, Millwood, etc....??? Like I saaid before, Hendry has been rumored to be interested in another SP and the extra money that he has to play with can allow him to pursue a FA or possibly another arm via trade (Zito?).
