ight, but i have to just get this out the cubs are thinking about trading mark prior for bobby abreu straight up. that could either be a really good trade or the biggest mistake in cubs history..

The trade for Juan Pierre has filled a couple of holes on our team and at the same time has created an opportunity to perhaps move our offseason in a different direction than it would have gone in had we acquired Furcal. Let's take a look at what this trade did, what it allows us to do, and perhaps some places we go from here....

LEADOFF: The first thing that comes to most people's mind in the acquisition of Juan Pierre is that we've filled our leadoff position for a full season for the first time in many years. Yes, he did have an offseason last year (.276 avg, .326 obp), but Juan has proven over his career that he is one of the few legitimate leadoff men in baseball, sporting over a .300 lifetime BA, along with an OBP of .355. While Juan could be a little better at stealing bases, he still puts the same kind of fear into a pitcher that Podsednik does on the south side.

OUTFIELD: Another spot that Pierre fills is one of our OF vacancies. Yes, he does have a weak arm and doesn't always get the greatest jumps on balls, but his speed should make up for slow jumps. He'll probably wind up playing CF for us and how many CFs have great arms to begin with? Not a lot. He's basically going to give us an above average fielder with a below average arm. With what he'll bring us offensively, he's well worth it.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY: No, this isn't what Rafael Furcal is dreaming about (he already got his), this is one advantage to this trade over dealing for Furcal. While Furcal would have been a GREAT addition to this team, there is NO WAY he was worth $13M a year. Pierre is arbitration eligible and will end up costing us between $5M-$6M a year, while filling in the same leadoff spot that Furcal would have and filling one of our starting roles as well. This will give Hendry an extra $7M-$8M to go shopping with or bring over additional talent via trades.

If we brought in Furcal, the idea was basically to add another two OFs and go into ST. With Pierre coming in and saving us all that money, we can still bring in another OF, possibly use Walker at 2B, but most importantly, this opens up an opportunity for Jim to bring in that starting pitcher that he has been reportedly wanting. Wew'll have to see how things pan out, but that extra $7M-$8M opens up a lot of opportunities.

WHO'S NEXT?: Rumor has it that Hendry is talking to Tampa Bay about a deal that would bring over Aubrey Huff and Julio Lugo. Lugo would be another nice bat to have at the top of the order with a solid OBP and tons of speed, while Huff (not the best defensive player in the world, but can play numerous positions) would provide some left handed power who could fit nicely in between our two power hitting righties (Lee + Ramirez).

Milton Bradley? I'll be the first to admit, I'm skeptical about him because he's a tool, but he does have talent. He could easily give us another talented player, but we'll wait and see what Hendry does heree.

Washburn, Millwood, etc....??? Like I saaid before, Hendry has been rumored to be interested in another SP and the extra money that he has to play with can allow him to pursue a FA or possibly another arm via trade (Zito?).

The Braves are loaded at catcher and needed bullpen help badly.

I just thought jonny estrada was something else. thats two really good catchers that have left in the last three years, thats something else.

Estrada is probably an average defensive catcher with a slightly above average bat, but he doesn't have much pop.

Estrada was hurt a lot last year which gave the Braves a good look at Brian McCann who did very well. It's not that Estrada is bad, it's just that he's not appreciably better than McCann and he is more expensive.

id flip if we landed huff and lugo. wed be complete then. our rotation is complete unless hendry wants washburn/millwood. our bullpen is complete. our infield can be complete unless hendry upgrades. the main thing we need is a rf. im content with walker at 2nd and cedeno at ss, but id love lugo if we can get him.

Is this the move that will bring the Cubs to within 15 games of the Cards in 2006? :D

think about it, this brings so much more production in front of lee and A-ram now. we are going to score every game like the cards. and with a found closer starting the year instead of having to wait half way for dusty to make demp the closer, we wont blow that many more games..

#65
#65
well, that will all depend on if dusty lets pierre play or if he is stubborn. i, personally, wouldnt mind to see murton and cedeno playing. the only position we need to field is rf and id like to see a high obp guy there.

i am thinking milton bradley is our best option, but I think moving Felix pie up isnt out of the question, i just dont see it happening.

#67
#67
i dont want bradley. he may be a talent, but hes also a cancer that would only bring the team down and cause problems. i dont want pie yet, unless he is absolutely ready. id hate to see him end up like kpat. i wouldnt mind picking up juan encarnacion.

#68
#68
i wouldnt mind having jacque jones, encarnacion, manny ramirez(lol), bobby abreu(wouldnt give up prior though), or aubrey huff. id take bradley after all of those.

#69
#69
yeah i totally had a mind laspe over them. Encarnacion i cant see happening. wouldnt it be sick to see jacque jones out there in right or bobby abreu. I know it would cost prior, but maybe if we just went with pie and guzman, i think that could get it done. what about barry zito?

#70
#70
if we knew we could get washburn, millwood, or zito for sure, id give up prior for abreu. the pie/guzman situation could work, but idk if philly would bite since they want pitching, an outfield of jones, pierre, and murton would be pretty sick.

#71
#71
yeah if we got zito, i think prior may be out the door. Which is kinda upsetting, but still... I just hope we dont trade Prior away, that could be a big mistake.

#72
#72
i wouldnt mind seeing wood being used as trade bait, maybe we could get rid of him, kpat, maybe even todd walker and somehow get lugo and zito in a 3 way trade.

#73
#73
yeah i just dont see where kerry wood fits in this team anymore.

#74
hendry was just on wgn, or was a little earlier, and said that he was content with the infield but would make a move if it would help. he says that cedeno and murton are staying and will start(barring injury) so it sounds like he will be dangling walker as trade bait but will keep if he has to. he didnt say much about rf. my guess is that he is trying to get lugo and/or huff. other than walker, though, i dont know who he would give to get them. we may see some sort of walker+prospect for lugo trade and sign a free agent for rf.
