THE PAINFUL TRUTH ABOUT "PECAN" ..... Here it is, do with it what you will. The word pecan has always been pronounced correctly just as it sounds, pe-can. It was an Indian word referring to all nuts that were hard to crack, such as its cousins hickory and walnut. We adopted it specifically for the pecan nut. It was pronounced pe-can because it was spelled as such, and was naturally pronounced like other words spelled with "can." Folks didn't refer to Toucans as "Too-cons", or Mexicans as "Mexicons." Only later did folks with social pretensions, who despaired of being snickered at for saying a word that sounded to the uncouth as referring to a container to urinate into, began to mispronounce it as "pe-con", to avoid the reference and sound sophisticated.
