Cereal question. Which interstate up there is closed besides 40? I usually go to Kentucky that way, up to I40 into Tennessee. I have other roytes gere, but been googling. I can be in Asheville in 2 hours, then from there to my parents (into Virginia then Tennessee i think it was) in 3 hours from Asheville. That's actually quicker than through the mountains here into Tennessee, if the road isn't closed. I'm not going anytime soon, just curious for later.
I26 has closures between Asheville and Erwin, TN. If you go that route, you can technically use hwy 23 and I think some other roads around Wolf Laurel, but they’re asking for only necessary traffic through there currently. You can take I-77 up to Wytheville, VA and then to I-81. Or you can go to Morganton, NC, take hwy 181 to Newland and come through Roan Mountain. To say hwy 181 is windy is an understatement, even for this Appalachia hillbilly that grew up in those mountain roads.Cereal question. Which interstate up there is closed besides 40? Thanks. Idk when I'd go, just looking at quicker routes in case I had to go quickly.I26 has closures between Asheville and Erwin, TN. As Bill said, I-26 toward VA/TN is out for a good while.Cereal question. Which interstate up there is closed besides 40? I usually go to Kentucky that way, up to I40 into Tennessee. A lot of tractor trailers tried GreenEville (Nathaniel Greene) to Asheville (hwy 70) and screwed themselves up. It’s windy and a mess. But I think it’s closed just over the NC line. It changes to a different hwy name over there I thinkAs Bill said, I-26 toward VA/TN is out for a good while.
My son-in-law drove back from Indiana last week and took US 441 from Gatlinburg across the Smokies to where it connects to US 74. For you, that would be way before Asheville. Something like 23 to 74 to 441. (Excuse while I get the car-sickness bag.)
It’s possible to backroads around the I-26 closures, but not easy, and those roads are a mess in many places, too.
I would have thought that you could maybe go through Asheville and cut over to Greenville TN and then up to KY, but look what Google Maps says about that:

Yeah, I caught that, too, the second time iPhone changed it.A lot of tractor trailers tried GreenEville (Nathaniel Greene) to Asheville (hwy 70) and screwed themselves up. It’s windy and a mess. But I think it’s closed just over the NC line. It changes to a different hwy name over there I think
Nathanael Greene actually....a staunch anti-slavery Quaker...Eli Whitney perfected the cotton engine (gin) on Greene's SC plantation as a labor-saving device. At midnight chow in Bagram you could occasionally get omelettes made with real aigs. Was one of the only joys of all my overnight duties/extended tripsEver have aigs at a deployed location, cooked by some TCN's, you'd be welcoming A1 and/or syrup. Lolol Masks the green and a bit of the crunchyness.
Parts of it are closed too. I heard the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia did reopen, but NC remains closed- now that I look at the second map pic, seems like @joevol33 could take the Appalachian Trail!
