Cuonzo Feeling Unwanted

Lets see what happens at Cal when he takes those 5 star players and must press to make the tournament. He does less with more than any coach out there. His run here to the E8 was more the players refusing to quit than a sign of his coaching ability.

Drives me nuts when people make this mistake.

HE DID NOT MAKE THE ELITE 8.

Does anyone have the actual facts for this so-called petition? Was it truly a petition taken "door-to-door" asking for signatures to support getting the coach fired? Or was it simply a message board poll asking people to select which option they would want IF Cuonzo wasn't the coach anymore - with Pearl as one of those options?

Those are two entirely different scenarios.

I signed it...more accurately clicked on it. It wasn't a referendum on firing Zo. It was for offering the job to Pearl if there was an opening.

This is a can of worms Cuonzo and all his staff members shouldn't have opened. Nicodemus Christopher is subtweeting UT fans and exchanging tweets with them. UT is undefeated at Twitter so they may want to stop while they are ahead as well as the guy who wrote the article. Shame on them for calling themselves "professionals".

Read the full article (free). Cal Golden Bears coach Cuonzo Martin has put Tennessee behind him and found a comfortable home

Whether you think he was going to be successful here or not, the way we treated Cuonzo was misguided and irrational. He talks about how he honestly felt like his family was in danger, and how he had to hire a security firm to make sure his house was protected. Don't be shocked if you see Cal make a run in the NCAA tournament this year.

The vibe had changed internally, too. According to a source close to Martin, a booster pulled Martin's access to a private plane on the day of a recruiting trip without explanation. Tennessee reduced its men's basketball budget by $1.6 million between 2010-11, which was Pearl's final season, and 2013-14, which was Martin's last season in Knoxville, per CBSSports.com. Football coach Butch Jones flew on a chartered jet to SEC meetings in Florida; Martin drove eight hours. As Martin felt the shift in the climate, the school's administration, Martin said, did not convey its support.

That frustrated him.

"When you have an administration, and there's a true petition, then your administration, I'd like to think, will stand up if they believe in you and say, 'Hey, that's it,'" Martin said. "Now, if that happened, great. If it didn't, so be it. If they believe and they stand up, but if you don't stand up, that means you're a part of it. That's how I take that. That's where I'm from. I don't think it was clear [where they stood]."

He didn't have to hire security. He chose to hire security.

Butch has allegedly received death threats this season.

It's about winning - not the racial BS the media is selling.

True. Cuonzo is the one selling the racial BS, and apparently many are buying it

Sad to see Jason Richardson pull the race card in all of this. Race isn't factored into the W-L column. The petition was caused by Martin sucking until the end of the season where we would win a lot and then barely miss tourney. Had he won, Pearl Petition would have never happened.

Why would a man feel the need to hire security? Because he feels like his family or himself are endangered. You don't randomly wake up one day and say "man, let's blow $40,000 on a security firm and cameras". If he felt like his family wasn't safe, then thus, he felt a need to hire security.

Butch has allegedly received death threats this season.
and I'm sure Mark Richt has allegedly received them as well.

My only answer to you is:
"We thought [the petition] was disrespectful because we thought he was doing a good job," said former Vols star Josh Richardson, now with the Miami Heat. "I think that race definitely played a part of it. I'm glad he found a place where he can be as comfortable as he wants to be."

Can't beat a more reliable source than a player. I do agree the media did make it seem like race was the bigger issue to him getting fired, but I believe race definitely factored into his liking around the fanbase and administration. That's an opinion you can neither prove nor disprove, so arguing further on it is a mute point.

Had he won, or had he won the way Pearl did? He was the SEC's best coach not named Billy Donovan or John Calapari and also took us to a Sweet 16 by year 3.

He didn't win like Bruce Pearl, and he coughed up games that Bruce Pearl wouldn't.

That whole "he didn't win here" is a bunch of crap.

Revisionist history.

He made 2 NITs prior to his final year.

If he didn't have the personality of an empty shoebox he'd probably still be coaching here.

OMG. I had to almost read the whole article before I spotted the race card. It would have been refreshing to not have that. CCM couldn't match Pearls energy. Anxious to see what Barnes can do.

The article seems to say so....IMO. This isn't the first time CM has mentioned "racial " issues at UT either.

Martin didn't mention anything about it in this article, and I don't recall him saying anything about it prior. The vast majority of that chatter came from this message board. And it was mostly people talking about how it would be stupid if race were an issue, not people saying that it definitely was.

If there were actual incidents of racism do you really think this would simply blow over? Uh no.
