Cuonzo Martin Out At Missouri

I wonder if Wade Houston or Bernard King think it was BS? Josh Richardson sure didn't.

They both kept those cards hidden up their sleeves and played them when they perceived they’d get the greatest benefit from the hands. Bernard was an executive producer of his documentary ($$$). Cuonzo was failing at a school giving him unlimited resources enabling him to produce.

I did not think he was a great coach but UT is far from a program where you would expect "thousands" of fans to sign a petition to fire a coach after going to a sweet 16. But it appears you are saying King experienced no racism at UT. How about Houston being denied admission to a country club while he was coach due to a white only policy. Was that based on money?

And as far as UT giving "unlimited resources" they cut the recruiting budget when Pearl left and boosters took away the use of private jets for his recruiting but you paint it anyway that makes you comfortable.

The petition started when he was 16-11 after a loss to TAMU. We were on the way to the NIT at best for the third straight year in spite of having a lot of talent and then the team pulled it together.

I thought the petition was dumb at the time. But I got why people were frustrated and it was an understandable frustration based on where we were at that point. I don’t doubt that some racist idiots may have said racist things, but that isn’t going to be unique to Tennessee and I resent the implication that race was THE motivating factor. Not saying Cuonzo did that. But others sure did.

I think Martin has always done less with more talent. That 1 year he had here where we went deep in the tourney was great! I was a supporter of his during his time at UT, but he's not SEC material. I think he can do a really good job in a mid major conference or at a small school like South Carolina where expectations aren't really there

Ok, educate us.
I’ve said it before. His wife told friends that people and called her business and said racial things and made threats. The friends gossiped about it and it was reported by a “social media” reporter. KPD caught wind and sent investigator to interview her at her house. When she realized she could be in trouble legally for making it up or exaggerating it she told KPD nothing actually happened but she had “heard gossip” from her friends.

This is pretty much my exact stance. There was definitely racist people because there are everywhere, but I don’t necessarily think it was the main thing at play.

Because 1967 is definitely the same as 2016

I think he will get a job at a mid major and could be good at that level. Everyone that seems to know him talks about what a great person he is, including Rick Barnes. I wish him well.

I just hate the way our fanbase was portrayed during that time. Those of us that wanted him gone during most of the 3rd season had solid reasons. He underachieved. That year 2 team should have made the tournament. We played like garbage most of the 3rd year until we caught fire the last month and made it in as a bubble team. We had to go to OT to beat Iowa, then lucked into UMass and Mercer matchups before losing to Michigan. We barely made the tournament with clear top 25 talent.

But absolutely NONE of that was discussed when he left. And everyone outside of East TN seemed to think we were crazy for wanting him gone before that sweet 16 run. Like there was zero reason in January, when it looked like we had zero chance of making the tournament...again...to be upset. THAT is what upset me during that whole debacle.

Ok During the season, prior to knowing the outcome

She could have decided that she didn’t want the racists to go to jail/be fined, you know. There are plenty of domestic abuse situations where people don’t want police to get involved and will lie when asked by police to protect others. If someone insulted me that I didn’t know well (or maybe was a booster, etc.), I wouldn’t always want them to be arrested by the police/fined by the police and be in the news everywhere.

I don’t see how not wanting to press charges is definitive proof that it didn’t happen like you are convinced, and I think Knoxville Police bragging about her dropping the charges when told it could lead to jail time if she was found to be exaggerating is good evidence of how it may have been legitimate and she didn’t care to press it. Police can be intimidating on that kind of thing to people without great understanding of the law, no offense to policemen.

Yea. Except KPD also got with the phone company and talked with the employees at her business. Nothing happened there. So maybe you should understand that they were exaggerating and making up things because that’s his MO when he leaves after 3-4 years after failing. Like he has done everywhere

1989 was not that far back. But you are right, EVERY thing is changed now
It was 30 plus years ago lol. And Wade wasn’t fired because he was black. It was because he was one of the worst coaches we have ever had.

How many wrong statements can you squeeze into one post? The petition was not AFTER a Sweet 16. The petition was NOT to FIRE a coach (it was to Bring Bruce Back IF there was a change). I DID NOT say King experienced no racism. Cherokee Country Club has/had written and unwritten rules about their membership. They are a private organization and managed to get away with excluding women, some minorities, and some faiths for decades. BUT the Knoxville and university communities addressed Wade’s lack of an “option” to join CCC by inviting him to many other private clubs (including Fox Den).

I agree with most of that except the "clear top 25 talent" Richardson has far exceeded his perceived potential and our Big guy couldn't dunk (as much as I loved Stokes). Although we did get screwed on the BS charge call on Stokes against UM, which cost us the elite 8.

Despite whether or not racist things were said about/to him, we can agree this job was too much for him to handle. Look at his overall resume at multiple schools with talented rosters.

Give any good coach that team Cuonzo had during his final year here, and that's a final 4 team

I never thought he was a great couch. The reality is he would still have his job if Pinson had not transferred.

Okay, actually good points. I’ll drop it

That is a stretch. Although he was 1 bad call away from the elite 8

Show us your source that the recruiting budget was cut as soon as Bruce left. I’ve never heard that before. Yes. A booster took away Cuonzo’s use of his aircraft after CCM was caught using it while interviewing with another school. I was in CCM’s corner until he started pulling that crap and also promoting the us versus them garbage with his players and all of the TN fans.

Oh so they found a club he could join. Pool or a pond, pond would be good for you.
