I'm neutral on Martin, one year is not enough time to evaluate a coach. His tournament record as Head Coach as I have been able to find is:

2008-2009
Lost in conference tournament, not sure which round high seed.

2009-2010
Won CIT tournament
(at large bid) defeating Pacific (at large bid). Defeated #3 Creighton in Semi's.
Lost 2nd round Conference Tournament as #7 seed to #2 Wichita State

2010-2011
Lost in Conference Tournament Finals as #1 Seed.
Lost 2nd round NIT Bid as #3 seed to #2 Miami

2011-2012
Lost 2nd round SEC tournament in OT as #2 seed to #7 Ole Miss.
Lost NIT as #1 Seed to #4 Seed MTSU

Hopefully I'm not labeled a hater  but I would like to see Martin's teams play better in the postseason.

He will figure it out. So will the players. Different expectations and at a different level. I agree about the year to early to evaluate.

I know this will rub people wrong but Kentucky was awesome last night. Knowing we shut them down in Knoxville is a positive sign.

Conditioning will take a year I look for this to be a strength for all his future teams at UTK.

It's not that big of a deal right now. Most of those teams haven't been as talented as they should. They overachieved a lot during the regular season and that created more expectations for the regular season. Hopefully next season should be a fair indicator on how well of a postseason coach he is.

Yes, last 3 seasons, I would say his teams overachieved in the regular season and underachieved a little bit in the post season.

so its kind of a matter of how you look at it...

if his teams didnt overachieve they wouldnt have then been expected to do better in the posteason, right??

like this year, most pre-season wouldnt have expected a nit 1 seed. BUT he overachieved in regular season, thus people expected the same in post season.

Great post OP. I am one of the biggest UT/Martin homers, but I will definitely concede to any valid point made. I agree. He will definitely have to show improvement in that category. It really sucks because a lot of good coaches can create good teams, but the tourneys just bite them in the ass.

Finally a rationale poster, I wasn't trying to knock Martin, he did a good job this year, but the postseason was disappointing. :good!:

Reasearching for any reason to blast a Vol coach would label you an idiot non-fan not a hater!

Judging a basketball coach on post season record is kinda dumb. How many points did he lose by in each of those games? If he was blown out by 20 in each of those games, I will concede he needs to improve. If he lost by 2-3 points, then you have to concede that any team can lose to anyone. Duke just lost to LeHigh, you gonna say that Coach K sucks? Basketball is a sport that if your players are having a bad night shooting, you can be the greatest coach of all time and lose to anyone. That is the nature of the game.

I see by your analysis though; he made the conference finals once, he beat some teams that have done alright for themselves the past few years. Also take into effect that he was coaching at a mid major, the games he won were probably upsets, so he gets credit there.

Now, for this year, this was his first year coaching at a major program. He took a team that lost 15 games last year, that lost their 2 best players, and ended up with the same amount of losses. To me that sounds like we overachieved. We took out a Florida team twice that just made it to the elite 8. We beat UConn, we lost to Kentucky by 2 at home.

There were some positives this year, there were some negatives.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Pearl never won the SEC tourney and only made the final once. As a two time 2 seed in the NCAA he lost in the 2 round and the sweet 16 respectively. If you look at preseason tournies he only won one his final year. Despite how his tenure ended most would say he's one of the best to ever coach at TN.

My point is I fail to see your point at this point.

Only one team can win Tournaments. Therefore I'm sure plenty of coaches have the same postseason resume as Martin.

One of his best players had knee surgery the day after the loss to MTSU. Any other information you are withholding?
