Correct me if I'm wrong but Pearl never won the SEC tourney and only made the final once. As a two time 2 seed in the NCAA he lost in the 2 round and the sweet 16 respectively. If you look at preseason tournies he only won one his final year. Despite how his tenure ended most would say he's one of the best to ever coach at TN.
My point is I fail to see your point at this point.
This coach's first four postseason seasons:
Never won conference tourney, 1 NIT loss in the first. 1 NIT loss in the quarters. Two second round NCAA losses. In his first eleven season. That'd be Coach K
This coach's first four postseason seasons:
3 NIT Semi's, 1 NIT first round. Never won his conference or conference tourney.
That'd be Bob Knight.
I did choose the two best coaches of all time, so it's a little skewed and no I'm not trying to say Coach Martin is those coaches, because some idiot sap will ensue that.
The point is this: It's almost pointless to judge a coach on his postseason results his first four years as a coach.
I'm not saying he didn't do a good job this year. He did, just the postseason was disappointing, given the seeding UT had.And as I said, and I believe it's being forgotten...
Ccm has overachieved in the regular season to create these "expectations".
How many pre season would have said a #1 NIT seed and 2nd round exit was acceptable for this team? The majority.
Instead though he does a great coaching job and exceeds expectations for the regular season, so now people raise expectations for post season. Not fair IMO.
Let's see how he does once he has the proven team, and is expected to do something. Next year is a year which we should get into the tourney no problem and should only be playing for seeding down the stretch. If we end up not in the dance, and lose early in the NIT well that's be a disappointment.
I guess that's my point, how many of his post seasons were/should have been "disappointments"? How many of those tourneys was he actually "expected" to do better but failed?
I'm not saying he didn't do a good job this year. He did, just the postseason was disappointing, given the seeding UT had.
Yeah the postseason means nothing in NCAA basketball
No. Just stating that not enough information given to make a dumb evaluation, much less a logical one.
I'm neutral on Martin, one year is not enough time to evaluate a coach.
