Current Recruiting Rank... predict + or -

I think it is wishful thinking that we have a shot at Davenport, Myles, Gordon, Sentimore, Moses, McGee and Logan Thomas. And that comprises many of the big name guys. i just don't see us cracking the top five. Top ten is a possibility but I still would peg us at 12-13 range.

I don't know for sure that LSU lands both Davenport and Sentimore since they are also high on McFarland's list. Moses isn't the greatest chance, but we still have Lowe and White to look to. Logan isn't a great chance either, but McHaney is still there. I don't know that we get any of those DBs, but we do have a shot with all of them as well as Hunter and Swearinger.

I think many may be overestimating the love C Hall is going to get from the Recruiting svcs. He went down there a 2*. I think it is unlikely he comes out any better than a 3*. Could happen but I'd be surprised.

Walter Fisher went from a 2 star HS recruit to a 5 star JUCO

Don't get your hopes up with Lowe. He has now stated that distanced will be a factor and wasn't thrilled about the 15 hour drive home from Knoxville.

Landing guys like McHaney and Swearinger are't going to get us a 6-8 or 3-5 class. We need those big time guys like Thomas or Moses.

Peter White is still a 4 star OL we can land even if we lose Lowe and Moses. Every team lands 3 star players so don't act like we can't have a top 5 class with those players.

Um, he had 62 tackles, 13 tfls, and 11 sacks as a JUCO freshman. He has the measurables. Don't be surprised if he is better than a 3.

I'm not suggesting he isn't worthy of being higher than a 3*... OTOH, it appears that Poole and Johnson were as well. I've just noticed that the recruiting svcs aren't all that quick to demote someone they've had a 4* so they can promote even a more worthy guy.

From what I've read, both of the main svcs use percentages for 4* and 5* players as a quality control measure. They only allow so many of each for JUCO's... so he basically has to convince them not only that he's worthy but that someone else that they've rated highly isn't.

Only one team has placed in the top 5 per Rivals since 2005 with less than half their recruits being 4* or 5*. Nebraska was 5th in 05 with 13/30 highly rated. They were boosted by signing alot of players.

If UT signs only 25, they'll definitely need over half to be 4/5*. With 14 left to go, only 4 can be 3*. That won't guarantee a top 5 class but chances are very low if that doesn't happen.

Have you heard anything on White? I know nothing about his recruitment.

White still has a big list, but we are in the thick of it for him.

Don't discount Myles either. The kid has ties to UT (his dad coached Jamal Lewis and Inky Johnson and he is friends with Inky).

Here is D.J. Hunter:
D.J. Hunter - Football Recruiting
It doesn't list us but the Volquest writers had an interview with him a couple weeks ago and he said we were definitely in his top 3 along with Indiana and tOSU. I think I heard that tOSU won't have room for him, though.

I'm not saying by any means that we will for sure be top 5, just saying there is potential but I do expect 6-8.

I have heard the same thing about Hunter and tOSU. Myles also has ties to Purdue(I think his dad played there). I thought Lowe was pretty much a lock but he has continually reiterated that distance will be a factor after his visit to UT.

I think, in the end, we end up around the 12-13 spot. We certainly have some tough battles with guys like Moses, Thomas, Oku and Myles.

I think Oku really doesn't like our depth, especially since we picked up Giles. He says its no big deal but we were his clear leader before and not so much now. I still think we have as good a shot as any, but it'll be tougher.

I guess the real question is whether the Vols will need Oku if they have Giles and current talent on-hand?

We really don't but we will lose Foster after this year and noone knows if Hardesty can stay healthy. Our RB depth would be down to Creer, Poole, and Giles. All 3 are different styles so it wouldn't hurt to have another all around back ala Oku.

That was in 7 games. Also he would have been higher in the beginning but his grades were too bad.

Had he played for a better/bigger HS team and had better grades, he would have been no less that a 3* player in HS.

I still think Tavarres Jefferson will prove to be a desirable prospect midway through the season. Don't know if he'd be recruited at RB or for defense though.

Gabriel Hunter and Jefferson could both be decent backup plans for Oku. I just think that may be a position where they are saying that they will offer him the RB scholly but not go after another RB if he goes elsewhere.

Thigpen?

That guy gets forgotten alot but he's one of the fastest and quickest recruits UT has had since I've started watching the process closely.

He doesn't get forgotten. He just doesn't get mentioned at a position because no one knows for sure what he will play.

Scout lists him as a RB. He said that he was recruited to move around between RB and split out. If he can gain just a little weight and maintain speed and quickness... he may become the first one everyone thinks of.

I don't see him as a RB. He may play DB or WR. He may even have some plays for him at RB, but he will not be a full time RB, at least nothing you can count on for depth.

Top 2009 recruiting classes (July 2008)
(verbal commitments as of July 8, 2008)
(previous rank in parenthesis)

1. (1) Texas
19 verbal commitments
[+] EnlargeFrenship HS athletics

Mason Walters is one of four offensive linemen committed to Texas.
Numbers coupled with overall top-to-bottom talent keep the Longhorns here... for now. They have a unique situation not having to leave their state but also pass up a lot of good players by not doing so.

2. (5) USC
15 verbal commitments
Speed, speed and more speed. Stealing ATH Byron Moore away from crosstown rival UCLA was big. The Trojans have too many players not to be recognized, and at this pace they could have a special class come February.

3. (6) Ohio State
25 verbal commitments
The number of commits is pretty impressive and so are the top six or seven players. Looks like the Buckeyes' coaching staff can now spend their time sewing things up, while focusing on the 2010 class and making sure these birds don't fly the coop over the next several months.

4. (2) LSU
13 verbal commitments
[+] EnlargeTom Hauck

ESPN 150 Watch List linebacker Jon Bostic has LSU among his schools of interest.
It has been slow going for the defending national champs over the last five weeks, but the next target for them is sure to be OLB Jon Bostic (Wellington, Fla./Palm Beach). Expect things to heat up for them again late summer/early fall.

5. (3) Georgia
11 verbal commitments
Speaking of slow going, the Bulldogs are circling the airport and have been in a holding pattern for sometime now, but the pups that are on board are excellent. O-Line, quarterback and running back seem to be set for quite awhile in Athens.

6. (6) Clemson
10 verbal commitments
After exploding out of the gate, the Tigers have slowed somewhat as well. Running back seems to be a strength again with underrated Larry Raper (Shelby, N.C.) and Ben Axon (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) on board. With all these players, expectations at Clemson are going to skyrocket -- especially if it can live up to the hype this fall.

7. (7) Oklahoma
14 verbal commitments
Yet another jet circling the airport. The Sooners should expect a couple of O-Line prospects to bolster this group in the coming months. The development of OLB Ronnell Lewis (Dewar, Okla.) will be nice to follow especially if he can find a home and settle in against great competition.

8. (8) Florida State
12 verbal commitments
The addition of a kicker here in Dustin Hopkins (Houston/Clear Lake) is huge -- he can kick and punt. For the second year in a row, FSU is off to a fast start after traditionally making waves at the end.

9. (NR) Rutgers
[+] EnlargeTom Hauck/ESPN.com

Je'ron Stokes was the first player to commit to Tennessee's 2009 class.
19 verbal commitments
We mentioned QB Tom Savage, but the defensive secondary is being taken care of as well. Cornerback Ryan Logan (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) and safeties Gerald Hodges (Paulsboro, N.J.) and Sanu Mohamed (South Brunswick, N.J.) can run. Updated stadium expansion isn't hurting them either.

10. (NR) Tennessee
11 verbal commitments
Wide receiver Je'Ron Stokes (Philadelphia/North East) is a much needed vertical threat and Damien Thigpen (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) is lightning in a bottle and would be great for David Clawson's offense, but he might be tailored for the corner position.

On the cusp: Auburn, South Florida, Alabama, Michigan, North Carolina, Penn State and Texas
