Current top 10 coaches in CFB (ON3 rankings)

I think people are a bit rough on Deboer. Even before Saban left, there were cracks showing. When he left there was a mass exodus of talent. Deboer did a good job of holding on to what he could and its gonna take time. I am not sure if he has the time but its not like plug and play. Ryan Day has been playing with a stacked deck for the last 6-7 years and has one Natty to show for it. Dabo.. I think hit the QB lottery a couple of times with Watson and Lawrence he is a really good coach but number 2? GIvne the situations they went into and what they got out of it so far, I'd rank em like this. All of these guys are really good to great coaches.

1 Smart took a perennial also-ran to the top and is on the verge of building a dynasty
2 Freeman low-key has done an amazing job at ND. It is a much harder job than some might realise.
3 Franklin prevented epic dumpster fire and Penn State
4 Heupel turned around epic dumpster fire at UT a school that's been the 4th prince in the royal family. Very similar situation to Penn State.
5 Kelly- sustained success
6 Day - silver spoon. In the pre 2024 big ten OSU and Michigan were the easiest schools to get 10 wins a year at in the country. Anyone could have pulled it off. Since 1967 only once has OSU had a losing record (2011) they went 12-0 the next year.
7 Deboer what he did at Washington and Fresno was laudable and Bama is a much harder job than Saban made it out to be especially in the NIL world. What he can pull off this year will tell the story.
8 Swinney- benefited from the decline of FSU/Miami during his tenure. The Carolinas and Virginia are underrated recruiting hotbeds.
9 Franklin- its hard being the third son (big10). and now he has bigger stepbrothers to compete with. he made his bones at vandy and won there.. then took on radioactive penn state post scandal.
10 Sarkisian-- does not really have a strong track record. he has won more than 9 games twice... the last 2 years but won big those 2

Which Franklin is #3 and which Franklin is #9?

Day has lost his DC, OC and Oline coach this offseason. He still has one of the easiest paths to the playoffs. DC was a lateral move to a rival

DeBoar is a good coach but top 5 right now is laughable. He isn't even top 10, imo. Even though USC has struggled, I would still rate Lincoln Riley over DeBoer.

Also, I get that Dabo is a dinosaur in this new ERA of CFB, but he has 2 nattys under his belt and he's won 9 games or more for 14 straight seasons, and in 8 of those seasons he won at least 11 games. That he isn't number 3 behind Day is insane.
I think Deboer is living off his NC game appearance against Michigan. Because there is no way you look at his year last year and say he is top 5.

Here is what I don’t get about Freeman. Kirby Smart took over a double digit winning team. But so did Freeman. Let’s not act like Kelly sucked at ND. From 2017-2021 ND went 54-9.

Idk, how did Kiffin do at Tennessee and USC? Barely went .500 at Tennessee and then got left at the runway at USC. Was historically bad with the Raiders. Kelly elevated Notre Dame, he elevated Cincinnati, CMU too. Franklin elevated Vanderbilt and elevated Penn State. Those two guys have been successful everywhere they have been. Kiffin most definitely was not. And he isn’t doing any better than Freeze did at Ole Miss really.

You cannot say “Kelly isn’t a top 10 coach because of his record against ranked teams but Kiffin is.” Nonsensical because Kelly’s record against ranked teams is actually pretty good, and Kiffin’s is bad.
Kelly @ ND and LSU, Kiffin at two decimated programs, UT and USC (saddled with NCAA sanctions) and a perennial SEC mediocre program (Ole Miss). Kiffin is better than Kelly and it shouldn't even be debatable. Kelly has lost last 5 out of 6 against ranked teams at talent-loaded LSU. Kiffin's record at Vaught-Hemmingway vs. top 25 opponents is 19-2. I rest my case.

I guess you have to count recruiting and portal adds as part of the portfolio for coaching. However, I still don’t see either Kirby or Day as good game day coaches and I don’t think they could elevate teams with an average roster. They also have a very easy recruiting path each year. I don’t really see them having to do any ‘difficult’ coaching. Sark has had way too many brain freezes to be top 3. I only think a handful of the top ten are legitimate top 10 coaches based on actual coaching.

Agree. Deboer underperformed this year and made some questionable game day decisions resulting in losses. I don’t think he’s a top 10 coach even. Bama still had a ton of talent.

…also being objective that Heupel may not be top10. Love him and he’s done a great job rebuilding UT, but I don’t see a lot of in game adjustments or creativity at times either.

Lol dude your “case” is mostly falsified. You can’t possibly believe what you are saying. Lane Kiffin is not 19-2 against ranked opponents at Vaught-Hemingway. Not even close. In his entire career, he is 11-25 against ranked opponents. He’d have to go 25-13 in his next 38 ranked matchups to match Kelly, which he will not possibly do. I have no idea how you came up with that 19-2 number, but it isn’t even close to reality. You say that Kelly has lost 5 of 6 ranked games, but could you tell me who the lone win is against? Lane Kiffin. Kelly took over for Charlie Weis and Ed Orgeron. Kiffin took over for Phil Fulmer and Pete Carroll.

There is no argument to say Kiffin is better than Kelly. There just isn’t.
