"Cuts in Military Pay and Benefits on the Table"

I'm sure you know a bunch of National War College types and CGSC plus the PhD instructors throughout both who would laugh at pulling in all the tentacles to fell safe.

I don't know any that would not laugh at that.

*I should probably make clear for the non-Military VN users, BLUF stands for Bottom Line Up Front.

Kind of funny, I just started reading Machiavelli's The Prince today and this is in the 2nd chapter:

moreover they wished to fight with Philip and Antiochus in Greece so as not to have to do it in Italy; they could have avoided both, but this they did not wish;

I'd love to see your reading list.

BTW, what other books are "like" The Prince? The Art of War is the only one that comes to mind.

The art of war is nothing like The Prince. Sun Tzu pretty much gives a common sense list of how to conduct extremely simpe diplomacy and warfare. If you want to read more books that follow Machiavelian theory pick up Warrior Politics by Kagan and anything concerning Richelieu ad Bismark.

I haven't read The Art of War, I just know every time I looked online to buy The Prince, it would say, "shoppers also liked The Art of War".

Not worth the fifty-five minutes it takes to read it cover to cover.

However, Clauswitz's On War is more than worth the week or two it will take to grind through.

Cutting pay is just flat out a non-starter. Once the cat's out of the bag, purtig UT back in is impossible.

Easiest way to cut major costs right now would be to get rid of the current way the REFO operates. I did not need to be issued Gen III Cold-Weather Gear to go to Iraq, neither did the other 170,000 troops.

Equipment is currently distributed to deploying troops and the only concern is time, not necessity. The things I needed in combat were my M4, my IBA (replaced by the IOTV), my kevlar (replaced by the MICH then the ACH), my optics (M68 replaced by ACOG with J-Point replaced by improved ACOG), and my uniform (ACUs being replaced by Multi-Cam being replaced by who knows what).

All "comfort" and "gucci" gear should be bought and paid for by the Servicemembers (the majority of whom already buy better gear instead of wearing the issued crap).

No argument. Our units were ridiculous.

Frankly, the cut should happen broadly and the Joint Chiefs told to make due. They would.

I believe the military would be well served by seriously reducing the number of flags currently under assignment.

You should read Col. Yingling's (I doubt I spelled his name correctly) essay regarding General Officers.

COL Dave Hackworth had dome iteresting commentary on flag level officers in the US military as well. I tend to agree.

Officers with no real command. I have about a two dozen upstairs that do the work of one person.

The bloat is astounding. We keep rolling and there will be a J-triple digit gig.

O-6s and O-7s as piss boys in DC is stupid as hell.

Sounds like the military could stand to bring in the bobs.
