CWS Game Thread - Other Games

Their offensive numbers are fraudulent. We’ve been told for a week now how dominant they are offensively yet they’ve yet to get anything going. They’re consistently behind on FB’s in the mid-90’s, that’s literally every Friday night in our league.
Everyone thinks the rest of your staff isn’t that good because you weren’t able to sweep a single SEC series and we all watched the pen blow huge leads or at minimum let the opponent sneak back in. Yes, we offered Skenes an NIL deal and it was attractive enough to get him leaning hard, if not possibly committing, until LSU came in and doubled the offer. At some point there’s such thing as chasing bad business and it’s not worth it so we bowed out.
Look man, you do know this is the CWS right? It’s not like any team has been tearing it up offensively. This is what happens when the best 8 teams in the country get together for a little tournament! Nothing is easy.

As far as Skenes goes, are you seriously saying that recruiting him was “chasing bad business”??? I mean, I try to be as respectful as I can on message boards (especially on another team’s board), but damn! That might be the dumbest thing I’ve read in quite some time! I thought calling WF and LSU frauds was actually kind of funny, but this comment about Skenes is just downright foolishness.

Hey! No one calls our dummies dumb but us!

lol That made me laugh! I’ll keep that in mind going forward!
Tre Morgan and Dylan Crews are fun to watch and play the game the right way. Hope to see more home grown talent in college baseball. 3-year players give a team an identity and grow the culture. With that said, White and Skenes seemed to fit right in but I’m sure there were challenges in the clubhouse that most aren‘t privy to….I’m sure White was quietly suspended during SEC Tournament.

I, as a Vol Fan, take issue with the “best team money can buy” junk. Mostly, I don’t think it’s true, but if it is…it’s because UT and the NIL folks spend it elsewhere. In other words, what value does the administration believe baseball brings?

Jay Johnson went to the postgame tonight and started recruiting portal players, by mentioning three players he brought in via the portal. That’s a little crass for my taste, but if that’s the game, we better start playing, and quit whining.

How’s it not true? I think even LSU would admit that they paid $$$MILLION$ more than anyone else for their 2023 team. Granted under current NIL, it was legal and within the rule$, but they bought and paid a material amount of money for several portal rentals. No way they make it this far without them.

And no way TN makes it this far without Ahuna, Merritt, and Denton but it was peanut$ to what L$U paid.

Assuming the rumors are true about our incoming QB, when it’s his time to shine, do you want us to get tagged with that slogan? I don’t think it is true, btw.

It’s hard to keep up with the changing landscape of recruiting college athletes. I can’t claim to understand yet how it’s working or what direction it’s headed exactly. Like you though, I think programs better figure it out and get with the times or they will fall behind quickly.

As far as the rumors about Nico, I assume you’re referring to his supposed massive NIL deal. There is likely some truth to it, but TN isn’t engaging in any activity that all the other big programs aren’t. GA just got a commitment from Dylan Raiola for 24. His family says NIL money had nothing to do with the decision. Now he is the #1 recruit in the country. You think it’s possible that NIL money played zero part?

I’m not saying it plays no part at all, but lemme ask a basic question…would you hand an incoming freshman the kind of money that’s being rumored? Goes out gets in a fight or worse? It just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me on so many levels.

I agree. I think the programs that will have the most success will be the ones that excel in evaluating the recruits that will fit and be successful in their program. I mean it’s great to sign 10 five stars, but if only 1or 2 work out it’s just a ton of distraction and trouble. I think this goes for the portal as well. It’s great to bring in a talented player, but if he brings the wrong things with him it could be a detriment for the team. The programs that can manage and navigate this well will have the most success.

100%. I think some of the stuff we saw early on this year with baseball was team chemistry related. Not saying, it was portal or NIL related, we aren’t privy to that info, but it would be easy to see it as a possibility considering how much leadership we lost.

In a general way NIL to a Freshman who has proven nothing, versus a portal player are different things imo. For a portal player, you could kind of structure their college debt to an NIL deal, while still allowing them to go out out and do endorsements or signings or appearances, but I’m not sure I would hand the keys to the kingdom to an 18 year old. Wealthy people don’t get wealthy making dumb decisions.

Yes I see your point. Handing tons of money over to an 18 yr old does seem a bit reckless and potentially disastrous. How often in the past have we seen great pro athletes sign their first huge deal and then go off the rails. It’s a slippery slope. Hopefully the folks with a voice can figure the best way to make all involved as responsible as possible. Hard to see how all these things will work out in the future.

It’s a new world and what we’ve seen so far is the schools dipping their toes in lightly and outsourcing the NIL stuff to collectives. Randy Boyd is the right guy at the right time. I know he’s busy, but he’s a smart guy. We’ll be alright.

I have been saying all year what the deal was. You can’t pay to play incoming abd not pay to play those there. LSU did both and it worked. Others will learn that lesson the hard way.

I see, okay, so are you saying you can’t pay the incoming freshman, some of who you’re trying to keep from going to the draft and in addition the transfer portal players looking to upgrade their draft stock after you just signed, the year previously, rising sophomores for instance get nothing?

I guess, I don’t see how you structure that bargain. In other words, Maui gets whatever he gets and Kaveras Tears, for example gets no help? I feel really dense right now.
