Former Miami RB Lorenzo Lingard, consensus 5-star out of High School is transferring to Florida. Former Penn State WR Justin Shorter, also a consensus 5-star out of High School is said to be strongly considering Florida and could announce very soon.

If Shorter joins Lingard, that would be four 5-star players on the UF roster via the transfer portal; Tre Grimes, Brenton Cox, Lorenzo Lingard are the other 3.

Dan Mullen continues to methodically build his UF roster with a combination of really good High School recruiting and really good transfer portal recruiting.

This also fills a huge position of need at RB. Lingard still has at least 3 years of eligibility and will possibly be eligible this year.

One of the only areas Florida hadn’t addressed in the 2020 recruiting class was RB. This takes care of that, although they may add another RB on NSD.

"Really good transfer portal recruiting." You are assuming that his recruitment of other team's players begins with their entry into the transfer portal. There is scuttlebutt from various places on the internet, suggesting that is not the case. It's reaching a suspicious stage.

Why would he be able to play right away?

Former 5 stars out of the portal are hit/miss. Not a bad way to go about it, but they aren't guarantees either. Most wouldn't be in the transfer portal if they were getting significant playing time.
Rumors are circulating that Florida has been sending out back channel messengers to former 5 star recruits who aren't starting or getting much playing time ... just to let them know that there is a place for them in Florida's lineup if they enter the transfer portal. Then once they do? Mullen is on them like white on rice. This may be something to watch for down the road.

Then maybe Florida has just been really lucky because the portal has been nothing but hits. In fact, arguably their best players have been portal guys. Van Jefferson, the teams leading WR for the last two years on offense and Jon Greenard, the All-American DE on defense, both from the portal. Those are the two super stars, but there are numerous others who have been really, really good players like Tre Grimes and Adam Shuler.

No different than Pruitt telling Aubrey Solomon that he would always have a place for him if he ever decided he didn't like Michigan.

Per some internet scuttlebutt, Mullen and Florida are being very aggressive with this approach. It is a violation. They are using these back channels as intermediaries ... it makes it hard to prove.

No more than a secondary violation at most. No one is cheating or gaining an unfair advantage by this.

So when the “rumors” start flying it’s usually because someone has jumped out and started doing something better and more efficiently than everyone else. Like the rumors about Georgia “dropping bags” in recruiting or all of Georgia players driving “Dodge Chargers” or all of Alabama’s players driving “Ford Raptors” or all of Clemson’s players getting away with PED usage or Tuscaloosa Police being in Saban’s back pocket, etc.

I’ve said it for months and everyone just sorta dismissed it, but Dan Mullen is ahead of the game with this portal thing. Nobody has added more talent to their roster, and continues to add more talent than Mullen. So naturally, Rival fans and programs will take notice and instead of giving credit, they’ll start nefarious speculation and rumors about how it’s happening.

And watch how it takes off... all the rage will be that Mullen is cheating somehow by landing these portal guys.

Fixed your post for you.

Why would he be able to play right away?

Two angles; Miami had a coaching change at his position and the player has expressed a personal need to be closer to home. Gainesville is much closer than Miami.

My understanding is coaching changes and personal/family issues are both valid reasons for immediate eligibility. Of course, with regard to the “personal/family issues” I sure he would have to provide some sort of proof, although there are dozens of examples of the NCAA allowing immediate eligibility to players with ZERO proof of anything; see Tate Martell.

And so it begins... you’ve got Mullen contacting guys before they’re in the portal. First, there’s no proof of that at all. Secondly, if so, go ahead and accuse the entire NCAA because that is rampant. Didn’t Pruitt have a beef with Missouri over a very similar accusation? He was contacting Mizzou players after they went on probation and BEFORE any of them entered the portal.

Glass houses, stones....

Or contacting Missouri players after their probation was announced.

Tennessee fans should probably rethink this attack angle on Mullen.

Recruiting other teams rosters isn't cheating?

Cheating means someone is gaining an unfair advantage. Please tell me in this day and age when transfers are a daily occurrence how Florida and Mullen are somehow cheating.

It is within NCAA rules to contact the players of teams placed on probation, with multiple bowl bans. So that example is inapplicable. Pruitt was well within the rules. Derek Dooley did the same thing to lure a great DE named Malik Jackson away from USC after they went of probation. It was awesome. Jackson was probably the best player we had in Dooley's years and it was a nice middle finger to Kiffin and Orgeron for what they had done on their way out... and it was completely legal, by the way.

Good lord... if they are contacting players on scholarship with other schools and trying to lure them away, before they have entered the transfer portal... then that is not only against NCAA rules, it is also very clearly an unfair advantage for them over other schools who may have an interest in said player.

Some people would argue anything. You are being ridiculous.
