Dang Hugh Freeze can coach

Schiano wasn't Gruden. That was his biggest flaw.
I don’t that was his biggest flaw. I think there’s a helluva more than just the stuff people mention about Penn State. I honestly never really bought into that whole notion. I think he would be a terrible fit in Knoxville.

The fanbase rioted (literally in come cases) because they had been whipped into a frenzy then got let down in a massive way. We'd been told for weeks that we were going to get Gruden or some other "home run hire" that our long-suffering fanbase deserved and that a program of Tennessee's caliber deserved - not a "maybe" coach or a learn-on-the-job coach like Dooley or Butch.

You are correct that there were plenty of reasons to oppose Schiano's hiring - no connections to the SEC in any regard, his disastrous tenure in Tampa, and yes, the fact that he wasn't a big name chief among them. I wasn't even all that impressed by his stint as Ohio St DC; he seemed like he had one game a year where his defense got shredded by an inferior opponent and that kept them out of the CFP. By far the most impressive thing about him was what he did at Rutgers, but I had doubts about that being indicative that he'd be a good coach here.

IMO, way down people's list of reasons was the Penn St thing. However, it looks bad and isn't convincing when you throw a hissy fit because you think the coach isn't good enough for your beloved program. It's more convincing and a much more serious-sounding argument when you claim you're throwing a hissy fit because of the Penn St connection. Even though that connection is flimsy at best.

Schiano would have been a terrible fit here, and I'm glad he didn't end up here. However, if we're being honest with ourselves we all know that if Gruden, or a big name that we wanted, had Schiano's identical baggage there would have been very little to no outrage about it. Schiano wasn't a big enough name to overcome the baggage he brought re: Penn St.

You definitely gave a much more thorough response than I did. I agree with all of it.

Anyone hear AL.com Blake Topplemeyer on Finebaum yesterday? He said he thought SEC Office had softened on allowing Freeze in SEC. Also felt Liberty extension was just a way they pick up more $$$ when Freeze is hired away. He also mentioned that Freeze would prefer SEC.

Many would see it as us being too good and moral to hire someone who couldn’t be legally tied to a scandal, only to hire someone that was proven and punished.
Not at all. Freeze is a proven winner. Schiano is not. Different.

Freeze wants in the SEC and has even called UT a dream job.

Speaking of Schiano he can coach and he would have us doing good but Freeze would be my pick better offense. I don't think Schiano did anything wrong.
Attempting to blow up victory formations to try to prove you play to win told me all I needed to know about him.
There's a reason he's back at Rutgers after basking as OSUe DC instead of upgrade and it isn't about Penn State.

He really can. It'd be nice to get a coach who knows what he's doing. Then we'd win 8-9 games by year 2 and keep going.

Several SEC schools went after Freeze but at the time the SEC office didn’t want him back in the league. Now that he has been cleansed at Liberty, that might change. But yes, Pruitt was interested in Freeze as the OC And interviewed him for the position.

I think it's the winning that is doing the cleansing. A couple P5 wins, and a top 25 ranking at a small school while a lot of teams are struggling sends a pretty strong message.

The SEC likes being strong. They will "forgive" even if they wont forget.
