Danielson

I have gone back and watched, listened to him and he praises everything about Bama's players. Quick feet, you would think Gibbs ran for 300 yards and we outgunned them on the ground. Then the impeccable decisions of Young, his ability to see all that is going on, over and over. Hooker had a great game, great game. He says a few nice things about Hooker but you would think Bama was ahead by 20 points and Hooker had a mediocre game compared to Young. Sickening. I take nothing from Young or Gibbs, Danielson is awful. You would think he graduated from Bama or was being paid by them. JMHO
I re-watched the game and he was *still* doing it. 😂

Gibbs is good, Bryce is even better, and he said as many good things about Hooker and Hyatt as he did those two.

I would be willing to bet bammer fans are saying the exact opposite of you

I'm probably in the rare crowd who enjoy listening to Nessler and Danielson. Danielson understands the game, so I echo DC_Vol's thoughts. I've gone back and watched highlights of the LSU and FL games. If Danielson is biased, I don't notice it that much. Maybe it's because I'm focused on the game. Our OL helped make Hooker and Hyatt's performance look stellar, and Danielson seemed to be praising our offense as group. Young and Gibbs seemed to be carrying the entire offense on Bama's side, so the praise went to them. Even if Danielson is biased, that doesn't bother me. I'd rather listen to Nessler/Danielson than Kesling.

So glad Tennessee has beaten Florida, Alabama and LSU all in the same season. Not many teams can do that and I'm wondering if that's ever happened. Maybe Auburn? But, Auburn and Florida don't play every year.

Vols need to go on a winning streak of their own against UF and Alabubba.

It's been embarrassingly and unacceptably too long losing to both

Danielson reads off of a screen with information provided by analyst within the network. He's not the Guru you think he is.

We need to apply the scientific method to this.

My hypothesis matches most folks here: I think Danielson is strongly pre-disposed to (a) talk about and (b) praise the favored team. Which in recent years has always been Bama / UGa / Florida.

But that has never been proven, to my knowledge.

So I'll re-watch the game today (no, really, it's my pleasure :) ) with a counter in hand. Every time Danielson speaks, I'll put the comment in one of these categories:

-- about Bama
-- about Tennessee
-- about neither (you know, just talking football in general, or even off-topic stuff)

And within those three categories, I'll try to differentiate:

-- favorable
-- neutral
-- critical

That part can be harder, because there are things like left-handed compliments, which Danielson excels at, and damning by faint praise, which he uses as well. But I'll do my best.

So it will be a matrix:

I'll limit the count to the time between kickoff and game-winning FG/time expired. All the pre-game fluff is just that; we're interested in how he covers the actual game.

Okay, experiment structure and conditions established.

Will report back later.

Gary Danielson will always be a cheerleader for Florida,Georgia or Alabama when they play Tennessee. He wore a tie with Florida colors while calling the Tennessee-Florida game.

I don’t know. During the game I swear at times it sounded like he was trying to talk us into a turnover.

Gary sounds so sad when Tennessee is about to beat Florida,Alabama or Georgia. You would think he was working for the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

U nailed it. Gary is using the old Howard Cossell model . Sports Illustrated did a poll on the most hated sports broadcaster Howard won, they did the most known sportscaster Howard won. They did what sportscaster gets the most reads (now days hits) Howard won. Ppl are making Gary rich and SDS does a Blank University hates Gary every week article just copy paste edit names and collect Ad $$$$ Yep Sports fans are doing just what they want and their laughing all the way to the Bank.

Where’s the SEC Shorts guy’s cattle prod? I’m glad people could still find so many things to complain about during our best season in 2 decades. Wouldn’t be the same around here if fans weren’t bitching about something. Danielson was ok. We gotta let some stuff slide

I was wrong.

I've only watched one quarter, but I think it is already clear my hypothesis was wrong.

Danielson may have been biased in the past, but in this game, he's just a fan of good football.

Here's the count, 15 minutes into the game:

1666268530996.png

Danielson is talking about the two teams equally as often (total 36 comments to 36). He is more critical of the Tide, but that's because the Vols outperformed them in the 1st quarter (the score, 21-7).

I'll keep going, at least to halftime (because Bama comes back in the 2nd qtr, want to see how Danielson shifts with that). But I'm pretty sure I was wrong -- he's not being a Bama homer, at least not this game.

Note: I didn't hear Danielson on Saturday; synced the video on TV with Kesling's radio broadcast. This is my first time hearing the TV crew's coverage. I've been pleasantly surprised.

Note 2: there's no way this experiment's results can reliably be reproduced. Danielson sometimes comments with just a few words, other times in whole paragraphs. In the paragraphs, he may make two or three different points. Some graders might count that all as one big comment, while others break it down and score each point he makes separately. I tended to do the latter. But thinking any two of us would come up with the same table is totally not reasonable.

He wasn't as bad this time as he was for the Florida game, IMO. Maybe I was in shock because of what was happening on the field and I tuned him out. I mean they were actually calling penalties on Bama. It was a sight to behold.

Bama fans complained he was anti Bama. I never have understood the Damielson hatred. I havent found him biased ahainst TN or pro any other team. Tennessee fans think all announcers should be Big Orange fans. I like Gary's announcing, find him very knowledgeable of football. He had plenty of positive things to say about UT. Honestly, Ive read more negative remarks about this team on this board than from any announcer calling uur games.
