I’m a huge fan of the way this kid handled his business at UT. Never complained. Did everything that was asked of him. Got better every year. He could’ve bolted when Pruitt was fired, but he stuck around and showed loyalty to UT and his teammates. Hope he plays in the NFL for 15 years. Good luck young man.

He's voluntarily refusing to help his team win an important bowl game ...

What makes this game important? It's not a title game or a playoff game.

This game is a preseason 2023 game. It wouldn't bother me if every player that doesnt have 23 eligibility opted out. I want next years team to get as many reps as possible.

That's a brilliant way of referring to these bowl games - 2023 preseason games. Well done.

Uh, he did. The season ended in Nashville. The bowl game is reward for a successful season, and is important for exposure and revenue, and giving the coaches a chance to see recruits in practices and young guys in the game.

The only selfish ones are fans like you who expect a kid who worked hard and is preparing for his future to do something you would never in a million years advise your own kid to do unless you were a complete fool.
ok, so I don't get this argument that he is risking getting hurt, etc and so on. If that were the case why did he play in Nashville? Why risk injury on a wet soggy field where the outcome really didn't matter? And yes why shouldn't fans be selfish? We go to the games, we travel, we invest in the season and in this program to a very large extent with our donations, contributions, etc and so on. You see it as being selfish I see it as a return on my investment. Now I'm assuming that you won't agree with what I stated and that's ok because it's your right. But none of you have the right to judge anyone else for their opinions and guess what, we/they don't have to agree with you.

Let’s see:
Play the game and get hurt…potentially lose millions of dollars.
Don’t play the game and be guaranteed millions of dollars.
It’s an easy choice. It’s easy for you to make these decisions because it isn’t YOUR millions of dollars at risk.
Then why play in Nashville on a wet soggy field where the outcome really didn't matter in the scheme of things? I mean if your gonna go down that road, go all the way down.

Not me to decide. Just like it isn’t up to you. I selfishly want Hyatt to play and put up 5 TDs too. But if he doesn’t want to play in a bowl game…I understand

Very simple. Vandy was the last game of the 2022 season.

The Orange Bowl is the first game of the 2023 preseason. It'll be an incredibly fun trip, and well worth the investment for any fans that choose to go and whose lives aren't tied up in the decision of a kid who won't be here in 2023, and might decide to begin considering the career he has in front of him after giving his blood and sweat for the school for the last three years.

Straight up BS Sami. The last game of 2022 is the Orange Bowl on DECEMBER 30, 2022. Note the actual year the game is being played in. No matter how you try to justify your argument you can't use the "he might get hurt" reason. It doesn't fly. But hey it is what it is. You guys have converted me. I'm with you, it's a useless endeavor that has almost no meaning. Could care less about spending $1000's to go see a glorified scrimmage. I can wait until the orange-and-white game and see the same thing. As a matter of fact, why would a season even matter after a loss or two? Bowl games are just a conduit for practice and experience, no real value other than that. But hey, we have one 10-win season and one high-profile player in the last 20 yrs, and all of a sudden we are too good to be going to the lowly Orange Bowl. I guess this is really what sets us apart from teams like Alabama etc. Their Heisman-winning QB and outland trophy-winning linebacker actually decided it was worth staying and playing in their meaningless Sugar Bowl. I guess they need the practice game to be NFL ready. Our guys are ready.

Well stated. These guys are purposely downplaying the significance of TN reaching a "New Year 6" bowl, getting 11 wins, and finishing top 5 for the first time in a long long time in order to justify Hyatt's decision. Calling the Orange Bowl a 2023 pre season game is laughable! For us fans and the program its a big deal! It SHOULD be a big deal to Hyatt but clearly he's more concerned about the $$ bag than he is helping his team get that 11th win and finishing top 5 in the country. My respect for him has dropped as a result. I'm still appreciative of his contributions and I wish him well. However I still say quitting on your team before the last game for fear of injury is a chicken sh_t move and a ding on your character! But hey, I guess protecting your own self interest really IS the be all/end all in life for some people.

My enormous appreciation and respect goes out to Mr. Wright for understanding and respecting the fact that the job is not finished yet! That there IS still a lot to play for here and that he unselfishly chose to put it all on the line for his coaches, his teammates, and Vol Nation one last time! You sir are a true VFL.

To Hyatt, you should be ashamed of your decision and I hope one day you realize that this was a mistake and that you live to regret it. Unlike some on here, I believe there are certain values and principles that are bigger than monetary gain. Yes I know that is considered to be an antiquated way of thinking to some in this selfish, me first, narcissistic "TikTok" era we live in now, which is unfortunate. Maybe one day you'll realize this.

This is pure sanctimonious garbage. You're the one who should be ashamed at having such a selfish viewpoint - you aren't thinking of the program or school or the kid, you're thinking only of yourself as a 'fan'.

Way to completely twist the argument and go back to the 'meaningless' straw man. But you made yourself feel better, so there's that.

Enjoy your weekend.

The bowl games USED to be the LAST GAME of the CURRENT season. The outcome of the game will determine the final standing for the teams for 2022. If these games ARE NOT part of 2022, then just cancel them and schedule them in AUGUST 2023 where BOTH teams will be using their 2023 team and ONLY their 2023 team.

I feel some of you are using the preseason 2023 thoughts in case TN loses big time due to missing their All American players. And if that happens, trust me, I will be staying away from here because I know we'll see the FIRE someone folks out in force.

Why play any game when you reach the top of the draft board or 1st or 2nd round

He is thinking of the program and team. That's why he wants him to play.

Easy to post when you have no NFL contract to consider

I get that, but most who will be drafted still play.

I don't have any problem with a player leaving after their junior year, but when they decide to come back, I think they need to stay the entire year.

Hyatt probably secured his draft position after the Bama game. Why not just quit then?

Oh its coming! Players will continue to move the cheese, so long as they can get away with it. You just watch. The time is soon coming where once a team is out of playoff contention, NFL bound players will shut their seasons down and quit. Its pathetically weak and callow! They say money doesnt change people, it unmasks them! Well we are now seeing the ones with the character flaws!

Universities are under NO obligation to get players to the NFL! That is NOT the purpose of bringing players in! Universities give these players education, food, room and board, training, nutrition, etc in state of the art training centers for one reason (actually two)! That reasons are to develop players to help bring paying fans to the stadiums and victories to the school! Thats the transaction! When a player quits on his team before the season is over, he didn't fulfill his part of that exchange!
