I’ve seen a lot of trash talk from UGA fans the past few days, from people on Facebook to Uncle Lou. It started before this weekend, but it’s really picked up since beating ‘Bama. We are in their heads, big time.
It’s interesting because there are also Dawg fans who are rejoicing to see Bama go down. I think the paradox can be explained this way:
They’ve been on the cusp for 3-5 years and finally got over the hump in last year’s National Championship Game. Now they’re expecting to be the new king of the mountain when the Tide “rolls” out. They likely see our win as a harbinger of Alabama’s impending downfall.
They’re talking trash at us, though, because they’re scared. Our win Saturday may prove to be a harbinger of Bama’s downfall and it may not, but it is most certainly a sign that UT is back. Heupel has done in a year and a half with one full recruiting class what it took Kirby 5 years and multiple top 5 classes to do.
Suddenly their heir apparent status is in question. The writing is on the wall: they will not, in fact, be the “next Bama.” They will, going forward, have to scrap and claw for every shot at the SEC and National Championship, and they better get us this year, because it won’t get any easier.
Know this: if we beat UGA on November 5, the meltdown will be absolutely epic. I think they will take it even worse than the Alabama fanbase has, because Alabama has had their day (read: decade) in the sun. In the minds of UGA’s fans, this is supposed to be their moment. If we beat them, it will mean that at best, they are going to have to share the spotlight; at worst, UT is on the way to putting them back in the position of little brother in the East.
I hope they enjoyed it last year.
