'20 DC WR Rakim Jarrett (Maryland signee)

Really wish he would jump on board and start peer recruiting. This offense needs all the help it can get going forward. With players like Bailey and possibly Jarrett committing early it would seem like it would be more attractive to other elite players.

I'm not a "vet" like some of you guys in recruiting. One thing I've noticed last year and this year is we seem to have fewer commits than other schools at this time. Is that a coincidence or is this Pruitt's "style" or something like that? Do the coaches somehow help orchestrate when the kids declare their commitments?

Some of it has to do with how they closed the 2019 class. A lot of schools were almost completely finished with their classes after ESD, so their main focus shifted to 2020. We went in on the late close (and it worked) but that also meant we were slightly behind others who had already gone all in on 2020. It doesn't mean all that much in the long run.

AN is a great movie but I have to give the nod to SPR for realism and story..

Robert Duvall though..

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning.. It smells like..... Victory."

Ill take AN just because of how it captures the chaos and utter confusion of Vietnam.

SPR's storming the beach does offer the greatest war scene however.

I think for some recruits, the high profile types, they like the attention and may hold off on a commitment until late in the process. Obviously last year both for the ESD and NSD we had major successes. By most accounts we won NSD as far as improving our class ranking. Numbers don't really mean anything at this point but if Jarrett was to commit today if you looked at the average composite rating for players (not including kickers or snappers for any of the teams) we'd be tied with Georgia atop the SEC with an average of 0.9453 per recruit.

It just depends on how one wants to look at recruiting. For me, no worries as long as we're on top. (Even if Jarrett doesn't commit right away we're still ahead of Florida at 92.93 to 92.40). :)

Definitely not a recruiting vet either and will never claim to be, but I think the perceived slow start to this class is maybe a side effect of how Lyle front loaded his classes with whoever he could take a commitment from. We all know there was little substance to those big classes, but Butchy had something to point to and say "Hey, look we have a top ten class." In reality, if you looked closer the recruits in those classes didn't really fit specific needs and you could tell that he was just taking the highest star ratings he could to boost the class rating. A majority of Butch's failure could be directly attributed to not developing said talent, but there was also his frivolous(prob not the best word) recruiting tactics which eventually led to disjointed teams that were never able to truly mesh, in part because they were recruited for star rating and not for need.

Those good Butch classes were some years ago though and it could have nothing do with people's perception of the "slow start" to this class, but its just a thought.

I agree that this is part of it also. Pruitt is going after big time recruits and most of the time those guys want to take their time, go on all their visits, and have their moment when committing. Not to take anything away from landing Wright, Crouch, McCullough, Gray, etc, but we had some type of connection or we had been at or near the top of their lists for a while. But that's the most encouraging thing about getting players like Crouch and To'oto'o. We went head-to-head with the current college football powers for the duration of the recruiting period, without any real on-field success to show and still secured their commitments. Butch would rely on fringe 4/5-stars, highly-rated in-state guys, and legacies to boost his class rating. Pruitt is taking bigger risks in pursuing the 'Bigger Fish," and is starting to land a few. Very exciting stuff.

Under Butch we were almost full up by September. That involved taking flyers on some 3 stars who could be dumped in favor of higher rated recruits near signing day. Pruitt swings big swings often and it ends up paying off when it counts.

Last year Pruitt had a late jump on recruiting period. 2020 / 2021 you will see vast improvements recruiting wise. He is now a full year into recruiting his own guys.

I have followed recruiting since the Dooley era. From what I can tell, Pruitt and staff are more selective than the previous two staffs. Pruitt has an idea of the types of players he wants on the team, and focuses on those players. He's also much more careful and methodical, and relies less on recruiting service analyses. He wants lots of video of a player, and preferably wants them to work out on campus, before he offers. Other staffs aren't vastly different in this regard, but Pruitt seems to rely much more on what he sees with his own eyes. This approach takes more time.

Keep in mind, we never really how slow or fast recruiting is going. The coaches know much more about who is coming, who is probably coming, who has us on their list of possibilities, who are long shots, and who wants to come, but may have some work to do.

I’ve casually followed recruiting since Dooley and I agree. I also think Pruitt doesn’t focus on the players he thinks he can sign, he focuses on the players he wants the most. That means we go after more big names and may swing and miss a little more frequently, particularly early on here in his tenure while he is still building his brand.

Dooley and Butch both seemed to take certain players just to fill spots and sometimes to get a little recruiting momentum, without considering whether those players could hold up in the SEC.

Pruitt’s lower ranked guys at least seem to have the body types to be durable backups, and hopefully more.

Question: I saw he was a four star on 247 despite being 20th overall, so I checked the rankings and they only have 12 dudes ranked as 5 stars for the class of 2020. Anybody know why that number is so low?

I would assume it is because a lot of the camps happen over the summer. Probably trying to get some more looks at guys after they compete again. Just my assumption.

Alright. I thought they just gave the top 28-32 guys five stars, so it roughly equates to a first round of NFL draft picks, but I guess they have some other way of going about it

Heck it could be... lol the way recruiting services have been getting dogged lately maybe they are trying to be more selective with 5 stars this year.

They do give out 5 stars to 32 kids. They just wait to do the massive rankings update after the opening. If you check the 2021 rankings it's the same thing.
